what would be needed to make a vw engine work on a 11' boat? is direct drive ok? i'm looking to build a decent but afforable boat for me and the wife. doesn't have to break any speed records, just needs to be able to run water and land some.

look on the airboat trader there is a 12ft vw boat that needs finshing for 800 bucks save alot of time $ don't know if that will help any. if you got some cash to spend you may look around and find a car motor boat that someone let set up that needs some work I was lucky thats what I was able to do

well,
I know when run VW in aircraft they have to use a reduction drive unit, it is belt driven can't remeber the name of the place that makes them (been a few years since I messed with planes)may check with ....hummm ......... .......hummmmmm.....think it is "great plian Vw"

are you talking about building a water boat or a dry running boat? I ain't sure what I am going to do with mine, one time I want to rebuild the engine the next I just want to sell it but mine is a water hull for sure

FLrooter vw's work well on small boats but i would recommend a reduction valley engineering in rolla missouri makes a very good belt reduction they sell for $1295 and it's cheaper to buy the reduction than build a big bore stoker that put's out enough power I built vw motor's for 15 years and I would recommend a 1776 cc with a balance crank some mild head work and solex carbs should put you aroud 85-90 horsepower and run for a long time.

Scooter . I am building a 2110 . People say the duel 40 kads carbs wont run it . Or I wont be happy . Is this true .Building a new boat , webbers not a option now .Was going to run a 350 holley, but again. they say it would be hard to idle .got a eagle 2246- 312 dur cam i dont think it idle worth a d--- anywayIts in a streetable sand rail if u can help thank ,.if not thats cool too :D welcome aboard

Fatboy there is a guy named a.j. simms who runs kadrons on his 2276 race car and he run's low 12's and gene berg ran them an 2200 motors regularly cam selection is more critical as motor size and high flo heads are used I have run the on a 2007 78 x 90.5 with engle 110 cam and 40x 35 heads this was a daily driver with lot's of low end and good fuel economy that motor still runs today 9 yrs. later with same carbs

Thank you sir! Just new to the vw deal. A friend had one, now i got it .I put it togather .Got the fisher book and you know what happens then~!!building new boat getting in my pockets ,thats cool first things first.thank you for the time!

Does anybody know how to keep one cool? Everybody that I've talked to says in a "pusher" application it is impossible to keep them cool especially with a belt reduction which I feel is mandatory. One guy I've talked to is working on a fan for this purpose but does not currently have anything marketable.

I would like to build one but not if I can't keep it cool. Any thoughts?

you can call valley engineering at 573-364-6311 or find them on the web at culverprops .com they have a special projects section with airboats you might check with them to see what temps. and cooling they use

Larry at Valley Engineering is the guy that thinks he might have the problem solved but he will not have it completely tested for a couple weeks. The guys at Plains were not concerned so much with overheating on a direct drive airboat application but agreed that it would be a problem with a belt reduction. Apparently Plains and Valley are working together on some of the projects.

Airhead my initial thought when i seen the valley eng. belt reduction was that it should have been driven off the flywheel end thus allowing the factory style cooling and charging but afterall it was designed for aircraft use and not boat use i have done some designing for a rear model and started a moc-up my focus was going to be type 4 motors as i feel the are more robust and there case is aluminum and not magnesium they rarely need line bore and have 38% more cooling suface
