what causes oil to blow by

my 220 seems to be using more oil than gas. on a one trip i can burn up 4- 6 qts in a night if its already full. it does smoke like burning oil but it also is coming out of the breather hoses quite a bit.

you can get cylinders from SPEED WHEELIE

rings/cylinders... better have compression/leak check. this would also somehow verify your valve conditions

my true feeling want to go out and buy an 0540 at least thats what my dad has on his and he loves that thing but i dont know where i can find one for the the price of a better prop. but i think ill buy a prop and put some rings in it and be on my way. the guy that i bought it from said that about a year ago he put 3 newer jugs on it, so i guess i will see when i take it apart.

Ring Seal or worn guides, probably both. Most 220GPU's do not come with valve seals. So when the guides are worn they smoke big time because so much oil gets sucked past the guides. I crossed over a Caterpillar stem and guide boss and found Teflon PC seals for 48c each. I installed gapless rings and my ring seal was so good she was drawing a ton of oil past the guide that thing smoked worse then any motor I had ever seen but once I put in those PC seals it quit smoking!

mine uses the same amount of oil but it don't smoke
considering a total rebuild and a conversion
$$$$ first though

Rings alone would be cheap compared to new jugs, and
if it works for a while your ahead of the game.
the valve seals Thunder mentioned sounds like a small
investment for the return you'll get. and you gota pull
the jugs anyway.

I've got two 220 GPUs. One came with the airboat and a spare had only 30 hours since overhaul by the military. All 12 cylinders were pitted with rust from sitting over the years. Rings are not going to fix your problem. The best answer is to send the cylinder to Tom Jeffords and for $250 he will send you a rebuilt chrome cylinder. His workmanship is outstanding. Do two or three at a time and when you get all six your blow-by will go away.

You might want to think about upgrading to some 520 aircraft cylinders for your 220. You will have twice the horsepower and won't need that 0540.

Plumcrazy is correct but you need not worry with Tom's cylinders. The valves are done to perfection and the price includes the rings. I know I'm a happy customer.

My only problem with upgrading to aircraft cylinders is with the higher compression you need to run avgas. My closest avgas is 20 miles away and regular gas stations are everywhere. Plus it costs me about $40 more per tank to run avgas.

everyone has correct advice, small note, we always run air oil seperators on our aircraft, my old boat had 220 gpu even with fresh jugs still had to hook up one, sounds like you need a little of both. Leak check is the best first step may narrow you down to just one or two cyclinders. Save a little $$$$

Good luck :)

Swampcritter220, I just bought my first aircraft, well 220 anyhow. But I did the 0470 conversion, if your gonna leave it a 220 I wouldn't pull any of the jugs untill you do a leak down test, when I pulled mine apart a couple cylinders looked pretty fresh But on the other 2 you could plainly see the pitting on the cylinder walls as talked about above, find the weakest and if you have to, get 1 at a time and stay running. get chromed cylinders only, and you wont have to worry about those pits that rings aint gonna fix. like plum mentioned make sure you get the right rings or your gonna have a mess.
Just my 2cents.
John
