I just uploaded a couple pictures of a special engine Gary and Mike Thurman buillt. Mike just freshioned the motor up and put his "Jessie Jame's" bling touch on it, along with lot's of new parts......lets see who can figure out what is is....If someone can please place the pictures on this thread.

Clue...Lycoming never made this engine as a package.....more clues to come....

Nice looking motor, ya can't deny that!!!!

Continental jugs on a lycoming 4 cylinder block??????

Not enough resolution in the picture for me to read the valve covers.

How about some more pictures?? Looks like a 4 cylinder upstack with......???????? and some more clues too.........

The cylinders are lycoming.........they are not upstack,,,,,
clue....read the lycoming name on the rocker cover...it's "upside down"
Ill upload some more picts,,,,

Lycoming 360 case with lycoming cylinders with Contenintal gitso heads turned upside down and redrilled for lycoming rocker covers.

How about a 360 case with cylinders from one of these.

.

With the pushrods on the bottom like a Continental.

Maybe? Perhaps?

It is not as easy as just bolting up a set of cylinders on this. They are not a simple fit. There was a lot of different parts used to get it right. But this motor bolted on a little Franny Taylor 1/2 Deck absolutly screams. The owner absolutly loves it.

Man you guys are good...................

This motor is a Lycoming 0-360......the cylinders are from a TI0 541.......Its the only motor lycoming made with the camshaft on the bottom.........Thurman built this motor long time ago, the reason to use these rare cylinders is,,HUGE valves, and very larg cooling fins, which lets you run very high compression. This motor is making about 245 hp, Mike has est. this by the setting on the prop...Don Onstad own's this, he is a retired Miami Dade firefighter.
Theres a picture of a TIO-541 on my picture galley,,that was gonna be a clue, the 4 bolt exhaust flange, and upside down rocker covers are the other.
Ya ought to see the look on people faces while there tying to figure out what this engine is. Makes ya think its beer thirty....

Lycoming's last big piston adventure (circa 1966). This Turbo engine is a radical departure from earlier Lycoming opposed designs in that it uses barrel tappets, the pushrods are on the bottom, it uses a spur reduction gear, and it mounts the starter and generator at the front via a gear drive. Bendix semi-throttle body fuel injection (don't ask!). 450 horsepower. Used in only two production aircraft. Was this to be Lycoming's foray into liquid cooling? Perhaps, but a compromise was eventually made and it got an oil-cooled exhaust valve guide instead. Compare this design to a modern Continental geared engine.
