What size reduction

Ok fellas help me out here im going to try and explane what i have and im hoping you can tell me if its right or let me know what i need. So i have a 20x9 hull thats around 5000 lbs and is also used to haul weight it has a 572 big block crate and a 2-1 reduction modified into a 2.3-1 reduction with a 82” super wide wisper tip 3 blade prop.....so the question is would i be better off with a 2.52 reduction or sticking with the 2.3 ??

BWX,
Is the boat operational now? Can you advise the prop pitch setting you have now and the maximum RPM you can achieve on the trailer? Without that information it is difficult to advise.

That said, my gut reaction is that the 2.3 is probably the best for the 3 blade prop you are running. Changing to a 4 blade, 84" setup with a higher ratio gear could improve things.

What RPM's are you spinning with your 2.3 now? I believe Big blocks tend to like smaller reductions because they make power at a lower RPM than a high reving SBC.

A stock crate from GM 572 will turn 4 82" ngr's @ the 3 mark behind a 2.68 limited to 5K.

20x9 @ 5000 pound hull,,,,,,,,,,,,, Maybe 2 572's?

For how long ?

I recall a few of the Louisiana boys running them and they were short lived without mods.

Do you have one ?

I have a friend with a 572 gm crate engine with mouse rebuild :D , 2.38 box and 4 blade 82" NGR and it does good on a heavy 3000# deckover. I would keep the 2.38 box and change to a 4 blade JX with the short hub for that power. Very good push from an efficient blade. Very satisfied with mine.
