what to use on rust

I have tried several things, ospho, endall, rust stop, anyone found anything that works better than most on pitted but clean metal?

Phosphoric acid the the main ingredient in most rust removers. I like naval Jelly brand. Phosphoric acid is also the main ingredient in Snow Bowl toilet cleaner. Coke and Pepsi also have phosphoric acid.

You might need to brush it in on pitted surfaces then pressure clean it off and it may even take multiple applications. Be aware the cleaning action on aluminum is VERY rapid.

Good luck

Sandblasting stopped this rust (and some much worse than this) on our boat going on 2 years ago. Stopped it in it's tracks.

But I had a professional sandblast booth, air-fed hood, filtered/dried air, etc.

As soon as the blasting was done - (within an hour) the metal works was blown off with clean air and not touched by bare hands - and then priimed with a quality etching automotive primer and then painted soon after before the primer cured.

So when you mask off for blasting remember that you are masking off for painting too. One masking and it's done.

I see you've stated a sandblasting thread - you'll do good - but DON'T TOUCH IT and PAINT IT RIGHT AWAY. No rubbing with a rag OR ANYTHING.- just blast it off with clean air.

Using a fan (or another airboat will help get rid of the dust. Lots of fans at least.

Use a door skin or something light as a hand held portable shield. I used to use a 1/16" plywood piece about 2 foot by 3 foot. Worked great to keep the stream off stuff.

Make a shield small enough so you can get it BEHIND whatever you are blasting.

Blast from every angle. Use the shield from most every angle.

That dust will kill you. Sandblasting and the long term breathing of the heavy silica dust will cause Silicosis - A disease similar to lung cancer. Use a fan to get rid of it!!!

Good luck .

I've used the Eastwood product and it works. They call it a rust converter too and it dries to a hard finish that you can paint right over.
