I'm fond of the Remington 660 in 6mm Remington. Had one for a long time and it was a real tack driver out to about 150-200 yards. Short barrel wasn't optimal for 300 yard + shots. I sure did take a LOT of different game with it though.

I drug mine all over Africa and took Warthogs, Kudu, Orix and truck loads of Gazelle with it. It was murder on Florida whitetail.

I modified mine with an external bolt relaease. The earlier models ya had to take the barrel out of the stock and press a little lever to take the bolt out. Mine had the .244 Cal. / 6mm remington words on the barrel but the newer twist for 100Gr bullets in it.

I especially liked the squared off furniture for both a tight grip and for shoulder carrying with a sling.

I had a 3x9 Bushnell Banner scope in Weaver ( I think) rings. Military sling with quick disconnects. Sure was a sweet hunter.

I shoot a 6mm Norma BR and I have Killed 38 deer with 38 shots and they all droped in there tracks it isa one of a kind built by Dekota Arms and it is my Sniper Rifle shoots great all the way out to 1000 yrds has a 1in8 twist bull barrel and a Nightforce NSX 6x22 Scope my favorite rifle during black powder season is a Civil war Whittworth Rifle it shoots a hexagonal bullet very accurate.
 
Scotty, you mentioned lookin for another one of those 660's ...... what should a nice one be worth in 6mm. ?

Id guess in the high $300s to mid $400s maybe a little more depending on condition, headspace and barrel wear.

OK, I don't buy anything that's been shot out or abused. I occasionally go to shows/shops up in this area. If I find a nice one I'll pick it up for you if the price seems right.

When I turned 21 i saved my money to by a deer rifle but i wanted it to be big enough to take elk if I ever went out west so I got a 300 Wearthby mag. It is so bad on the shoulders I now just shoot them in the neck. With over 4,000 ft/lbs of energy the hydraulic shock shatters the vertebret and spinal cord without even having to touch them.
 
Thats one boss gun! Needless to say you arent cooking up many neck roasts :)

For Elk my dad carried his old Winchester Model 71. I saw what it did once to a whitetail and it was like it had been hit by a car. Poor thing was nearly cut in half.

Elk and Moose can be a tough nut to crack though. Better to have too much gun than not enough.

Have kilt a boat load of deer in the past 30 or so years
alot with a rem 700 in 270win. a couple with a mod. 94
win. in 30-30, and even a couple with my old rem 1100
scatter gun when we used to hunt horse back on the ranch
but by far the most successful harvesting tool I've ever used
was my old mod. 760. rem pump in 30-06, it could'nt
miss and always laid them right down.
PS there were a couple with a 22mag, but that was a dark
time in my life and wont say no more about that.
 
OK I gotta throw my 2 cents in on this one. Ifin I 'm in thick stuff and am hopeing to make a short distance shot (most of the places around here) nothing beats a good 12 gauge slug, have a 3.5 inch chambered 12 gauge Bennilli and let me tell ya THERE IS NO USE FOR A 3.5 inch 00 Buck round, kick's like a mule and has a poor spread pattern. 3 inch magnum rifled slud works every time.
Now up in Georgia were the Deer are twice the size of Fl deer I will use my Remington 7400 30.06 with a BEC. 3x9. and if I want to really reach out and touch sumthin I'll use the Savage .308 (with the new accuwedge trigger dialed down to 1 lb.- no trigger jerk at all) but don't have a use for that here in Fl. but it was one of those too good to pass up things.
And just to set the record straight nuthin beats the old trusty AK 47 for 2 legged varmit hunting (w/75 round drum)

Pretty tough to beat an old 30-06. I have a .243 that will take the head off a 'chuck at 300 yds. The Nikon helps, but I love that rifle. In KY I deer hunted with a slug barrel and scope on my 1100 Rem. ... copper jacked sabots.

I wish I was a better typist ..... one of y'all ask me about my .506 Rigby story one of these days. :lol:
 
I guess I dodnt say nothing bout the 2 legged varmints. I'm old school 1911 .45 ACP fan. Leave an entry wound but no exit. Expends all its energy in the target. Even the military wishes they had never give it up. It's not for everyone I know, but for some, they wouldn't be without it.

Actuallly I had a Smith 629-2 in .44 Mag that wasnt bad on deer. Loved handgun hunting. I never killed a deer with it but a friend had a little Ruger simi-auto chambered for it. He nailed one and anchored it on the spot at about 50 yards.

I can see if we ever build a Sounthern Airboat clubhouse were going to have to have a range out back or off one side !

Hey Bear,
I shoot IDPA once a week and all the other guys use STI frames or Paraordanace in either .40 or .38 super (both are Hi cap frames) but I'll stick with my sprinfield 1911 long slide. If I can't hit em with the 10 round mags then I don't need to be shooting at them. I'm just OLD SCHOOL got to luv the old 1911.
