Sportsmen and women with disabilities will cruise through the creeks and brackish water of the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge hoping to haul in a string of seatrout or trophy redfish.
Wheelin' Sportsmen National Wild Turkey Federation will host the Freedom Craft Airboat Adventure on May 7, near Cross City, Fla.
"This airboat fishing event is such a unique opportunity because it's more than just fishing from a pier or bank," said Kirk Thomas, Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF national coordinator. "The thrill of almost flying through the marshes to catch some of Florida's local fish species is exciting."
The fishing will begin at 7:30 a.m. and anglers and volunteers will return to land at 11:30 a.m. to enjoy lunch provided by Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF. Afternoon fishing will begin at 1:30 p.m. and last until 5:00 p.m.
Wheelin' Sportsmen member Meredith Tillman made the trip from Hillsboro, Ga., to fish last year, and is signed up to fish again this year.
"Last year, some friends begged me to go to the airboat adventure event," said Tillman. "I love fishing, and last year I caught two fish and three stingrays. Riding on the airboat was better than any ride at Six Flags."
With the same dedication it has brought to restoring wild turkey populations across North America, the NWTF is delivering - and in some cases re-introducing - the beauty and excitement of the outdoors to thousands of people with disabilities through its outreach program, Wheelin' Sportsmen.
Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF provides all people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors through local chapter events nationwide, such as hunting, fishing and shooting activities.
The program also provides a full color, quarterly magazine to its members. Wheelin' Sportsmen magazine is dedicated to the education and entertainment of outdoors enthusiasts with disabilities.
