which is better, single or double mag

Its a case of more is more better. If you can, add the 2nd mag, but lots out there run just the one it comes with.

Scotty

it kinda depends on the jugs you run on that 220 also a single will do the GPU jugs but if your upgrade to aircraft jugs like 470 your need dual since you now have two plugs per cylinder .

I have a single mag 220 GPU that runs fine since I had the mag rebuilt. The engine starts easy and runs great. If you do go to a single mag the first thing I would do is have the mag rebuilt. I ran mine for about 6 hours before the mag gave out and left me stranded. Luckily I was up river and was able to float back to the boat ramp.

If you get two mags that is the best way to go. It will allow the engine to idle smoother and give a little more top end. I would still have the mags rebuilt by a professional. I thought I could easily add a second mag but quickly found out the engine had to be torn down and the case needed something bored to add the other mag.

Des Moines Boater,
you only have to bore the holes for the pin if your adding another impulse mag but not for a drive gear mag, impulse is the best then you have two mags that would start your moor if one dies you still have the other to get started and get home

its all in what you want that thing will do just about anything the way it is, as far as a boat under 13 foot. and you can also have your cylinders done and have a second hole put in and dual mag it that way or put the aircraft cylinders on it. run it if you like it your good, if not the skys the limit.

Goldhunter, thanks for that information. Do I need to take the whole engine apart to add the impulse pin or just take off the accessory case? If I go with a non-impulse do you know what the mag number is that I should use? I have the O-470 cylinders, pistons etc. but the only thing missing is knowledge and experience.

Practice makes prefect   or at least that is how I learn

I don't know what the non-impulse mag number is , sorry. you will have to have a hole bored in the engine case for the pin to do the impulse mag . if you engine is apart now just unbolt that mag pin that is on the case and you will see the hole that has to be drilled on the other side to add a second pin for your impulse mag

The engine is still together and it is running strong with the rebuilt single mag. I'll run it that way until I have to do something else. Thanks for the advise. I'll ask for more help sometime in the future if I add the second mag. Right now the temps are in the 60s which means it's time to hit the river.

ok guys thanks for your info, my dad says i should go with a car motor but i like the 0-470's , i just dont know f i should build it up to be a radical motor or just a ride boat but thanks again

if you want to add another mag without taking apart the case ,I have a buddy at a machine shop that makes a gear setup for the second mag. Just bolt it on the second mag and stick it in the hole......... Been running one for years and never had a problem.
The ph# is (941) 955-5246 Roehrs Machine shop in Sarasota.
