who makes/sells aircraft reduction gear boxes?

ok this may sound silly and I know we talked about aircraft motors using gear boxes in the other post even had pictures of a 6 and 8 cyl with gear boxes on them . I have called around to a few laces trying t find where to buy one and they keep telling me I am crazy not that hurts my feelings any But who the heck makes the gearboxes for AC motors :?: and what ratio's do the come in for ac motors :?:

it aint STINGER, I would ask cowboy he is the A/C gearbox test driver, article writer so I beleive he would know for sure seriously not picking just stating facts he would know bette rthan anyone on here.

ya I was on the phone with mike at foral airboats today and asked if they had one for a aircraft motor he told me it can't be done and seemed kinda upset when I said I saw pictures of aircraft engine airboats with boxes

I guess we know who not to call about them....

Nothing worse than someone who has no clue about the answer to a question, but makes one up out of thin air.....thats one of the problems with the airboating community...the "folklore" gets carried away sometimes...LOL. Charles

I talked to JC Stanley yesterday (407) 927- 9701. He sells them, 1:57-1 ratio. With an adapter plate and a reduction, I think he said Rotator, is $4500. A 0550 350-400 hp Continental $10,000 to $11,000 depending upon modifications. He has a 15 x 71/2 Alumitech 3/16 bottom, 1/8 sides, 1/2" polymer with that setup, and says it runs dry ground with 6 people. He likes the Whirlwind 3 blade Stump Puller prop for that setup.
He also has new 0540 straight valve cylinders, wide and narrow deck, for $500.

he could have probably answered any questions about a gear box for a car motor I was just trying all the places I find on the net for boxes to see what i could find for aircraft motors

Whoa, $500 that kinda steep

I saw those 540 cylinders and they are new . never been in a plane or boat. some are complete with pistons and rings.

Good Deal RJ,
Glad to hear J.C. is still running his 8 cyl rig. Sounds like he's got it going his way now.

Gold,
The guy seemed upset that you had actually seen pictures of one huh?
I would'nt worry none.
That seems to be a perfectly normal response to A/C geardrives for many people.
I don't really know why that is, but just stating facts as I know'em.
Guess that just how it is.

It's all good.

Cowboy ,
it didn't worry me none surprised maybe:shock: . I guess it was a little bit my fault after he said it can't be done I should have just kept my mouth shut (I'm not always very good at that) instead of telling him I saw pictures of two aircraft engine with boxes and asked if he could suggest somewhere that may carry them if they do not

Has any of the aircraft guys tried a different ratio (like water thunders theory) I wonder if a 2:1 would give you more. Seems like the ratio there running now you have to spin up around 3400 rpms. With the new wide blade props out you think you could get props rpm down to 1500 rpm and it still perform well with a 2:1. I know you cant go to low but weres the line.
Also can you bolt a beltdrive to these adapters that the WPB guy is building? Like maybe the new waterwalker beltdrive. I bet cowboy will know!

I talked with abner some he is selling a 1.53 and 7 to one ratio but says the lower ratio ( 1.5 ) is better to my understanding basically there are no prop currently developed to handle higher ratios at such a large ratio.
I also have spent a little time speaking with the prop guys at the last two shows trying to decide witch prop and there first and biggest worry is that is to slow for there props to preformm properly

I been think'in the same thing Crackerstyle.
2 to 1 might be the deal with the right prop!
Superwide sensenich would be the best blade bet I'd think.

Besides, It would be so much more than direct drive, WFO operation would'nt be needed often anyhow. This is asuming a strong six cyl geared A/C.

I don't know if the adaptor kits could be used for a belt drive as they were configured the last time I saw one.

I have not spoke with Abner in over a year.
Just my opinions.
Everybody's got one.

Yup,
2 to 1 and 3 short superwides is where I'd start. If I had the money.
Perhaps by the time I do, they will have them all pretty much sorted out by then anyhow.

Heck,
By the time I got the money, they'll have a whole new generation of prop, constructed from space-age materials!

its hard to get your head wrapped around this idea but i could never imagine anything but a 2:1 on a carmotor. 5500 rpm with 2:1 means prop at 2750 rpm. Rite were the prop manu. suggest its optim push. Then I met water thunder at the oak head about 7 years ago, he was running a 2:6 with a 10 bld warpdrive @ 18 degrees. He said the prop spun around 2200 rpm. It just didnt make sense to me, he gave me a ride and i was impressed. I guess its like putting gears in your little toyota truck after you put a set of 17/40 ground hogs on it. The gear works for you.

He also stated that these sensnich super wides created the same amount of thrust @ 1100 rpm than it did @ 1900 rpm.
So I think your rite cowboy, this should be the blade to run.
Gold hunter, your research is helping me understand this a little more
thanx

Heck I have a 1:77-1 and plan on going to a 3 blade super wide sensinich. That three blade Falcon is not enough prop for my motor.
