Will this thing push?

Okay boys not super knowledgeable on airboating. But I’m looking into a 16x8 panther hull airboat with a lycoming 540. Not looking to carry more than 1000 pounds total. not trying to run dry. Will the lycome do the trick?

I don’t know anything about aircraft but that seems like a big boat for what you want and the 1000 lbs puts it over the top. I would start with a BBC 454 with a decent amount of torque.

Are you buying a boat already running or trying to put one together? A 16x8 panther hull will be heavy. Are you referring to a straight valve or angle valve engine? (235/260hp vs 285/300hp)

If its a complete boat, take it on a test ride for an hour or so and see how it performs. Check for leaks, oil temp & pressure, etc.

Will it push? No.
Will it run? Yep.

8 foot hulls plane easy as long as there is a hint of water. Dry the ground and that’s a stick boat. For the stated goals, it’s a great beginner boat. But it is underpowered for the size.
