Woodchuck for lunch

Ok we sure got off the topic of ---Airboat Brakes--- unless we will need them after lunch for _ _ _ _ _ breaks-----
So I thought that I would start a new thread Just because I can not believe that Bryon has never had whistlepig before....
How sheltered of a life have you led
have you ever had
Muskrat in the restaurants it is Marsh rabbit
Raccoon
Possum
Carp
Garfish
or chocolate covered popcorn

We don't have them up here but I've heard that they are pretty good if fixed right . they say it is kinda like Beaver.

I had Nutria in South America. It was shreeded and surved on a bun. Kinda like a bbq pork sandwich. But nothing better then a hub cap sized soft shell turtle

curdog - I'm with you on the hub cap sized soft shell turtles. We call'em fryers at that size.

I have tried the gar....can't say I was very impressed with that.

Never tried carp, but for some reason I've got a feeling it'd taste like mudfish. Tried that ONCE as a youngster.... :pukeright:

I wouldn't mind trying the rest of that stuff on that list with an open mind though.

Rick, Carp aren't too bad if you're real hungry ... . They're a very boney fish, and if you don't cook em right away you might as well throw em away.

K.

Yuck! I aint never been that hungry. Possum was greasy, Armadillo was, well, fair with B-B-Q sauce.
Now MANATEE, with biskets and gravy,MMMMMMM!

Racoon needs par boilin first then grill it aint bad
possum _ I don't know I have watched them come crawlin outta dead cows before when I worked ranches as a kid.
we made a dish called squirlew I cant list all the ingredients cause some of it was very expensive on a per pound basis.
Gar makes good catfish bait same with mud fish
I ate monkee and parrot while doin jungle survival school darn parrot is too tough to chew but I was desperate.
rattlesnake, its ok
dog on a stick was passable
I have heard rumors when I was a kid that iron heads and sandhills are pretty good but I would never do that myself
water buffalo was really tough and the locals got mad about it
best hog I ever ate was once we got dropped into a top secret location at night which turned out to be eglin up in the panhandle I had a hog come by while I was on perimiter duty and I had to fill out pages of reports about that one. almost as bad about the water buffalo they just cant take a joke it was them or c rations what was I supposed to do you know. I took out a elk during arctic survival training again no sense of humor and I wonder why I only made sargent go figure. I shot a lt. with 20 rounds of chalk bullets but he didnt die so I couldn't bbq him besides he peed his pants anyways he bragged about getting me in the afternoon at the breifing so I was waiting on him about 300 yds outside the perimiter he never shoulda warned me more dang paper work. But now aday I only drown minnows and gig a few frogs I have mellowed they say LOL maybe??

I have had several Chucks over the years. They were fun to shoot and made a good excuse for an outing. Eating Carp was an adventure. A friend’s wife baked a very large Carp in the camp fire coals. It was really good and easy to eat as the bones had turned soft. Her daughter tried to cook one a few weeks later and it did not turn out so good it certainly takes a knack to cook correctly.

No one has mentioned porcupine yet. The wife and I were driving along a mountain road in Wyoming one afternoon when a porcupine crossed in front of us. She yells to “shoot itâ€? and say if I do, you clean it. She agreed and I shot it with .357. (I also learned then to make sure the barrel is outside of the car before pulling the trigger- Loud) She cleaned it and made a stew that night. It was a bit greasy but not too bad at all 

Well I never ate any of those. I can say Remora and earth worm cookies.
Raccoon just doesn’t look right after its skinned; I thought I have seen fat pigs but there loaded with fat. I have heard to take the back strap out of garfish.
How do you prepare Hover Hogs (Armadillos)

Ok Carp have a mud vein that runs down their ?? side or back and that has to be removed before cooking otherwise you throw the carp away and eat the pan. I've had it cooked--smoked--and pickled it all was delicious. As for the fatty critters like Possum - Coon- Skunk- etc. the best way to fix them is over a open fire on a spit turning them slowly with one hand and a cold beverage in the other hand when the grease stops dripping then it is done (and so are you ) but it is good eatin

had barbqued coon didn't make me want to go out coon huntin
hoover hog ain't to bad still don't like to clean them
appiliated woodpecker fried was alright
gars good but what a chore to clean
ell is right there with specks
i'm with cntry on the possum
solf shell's good but it can't compare to a low ham steer (gopher turtle)

I tried cookin skunk a lot of years ago. I couldn't eat it so threw it to the dogs. In a couple hours the fleas was leaving the dog in droves ! I guess if ya got fleas it might work on folks too! I don't recommend it but my dogs got to where they wouldnt chase nothin but. They wanted to roll in the damned thing then act all proud n stuff ! I think they just wanted shed of the fleas though, even dogs is smart nuff to figger this stuff out. Think they'd rather roll in it than eat it.

Well, I believe I have had my share of those and some swamp rat ( Nutria ) several types of turtles and dry land tortoise, more types of birds than I can spell. None of it killed me, YET! Most all of it is fittin to eat if fixed right. Now I'm gettin hungry. Gotta GO ,

Got a brother in law that does a good job on coon, youngins are the best.
Was told that cat can taste pretty good as well. Just don't want to know what it is ahead of time. Clean the back strap/fillet with a machete or ax and toss the rest. Need to be alligator gar or big needle nose. The small needle nose and spotted are just for target practice.

I have always figured you find the right Cajun from south of Lafayette LA and they can make about anything taste good. Or at least that was my experience. Except Mullet - taste muddy over here in western LA and TX. But maybe it was the cook.

Night herons and ibis are really supposed to be excellent and I have a friend that claims I ate a gumbo with ibis in it. The young about half grown in the nest are supposed to be the finest eating around. But they bury you under the jail for killing them and put all your gear on permanent loan to the State.

Ya'll will have to figure these out.
Red breasted ground doves are good, you all have seen them in the yards during the winter eating worms.

Yellow breasted prairie quail are not to bad either I was told.

Then there was the hunter that got caught with a half eaten Pelican. Judge asked him how it tasted and he said Not bad but Bald eagle is much better.

cntry - the Lt. didn't accept the point that you were just practicin for real life survival. I can imagine the steam out of their ears.

Pat, as I've gotten older, and I sincerely don't mean to offend anyone when I say this, I've begun to look at the critters around me in a little different way.

When I was a boy you could have blamed an ol' Bassett hound named Hap and me if the American cottontail rabbit was today on the list of extinct animals. We must have, together, been responsible for the demise of hundreds of them.

When I got older I took up varmint hunting, not because I was hungry, but because of the precision of it. A head shot on a ground hog at 250 yds. was a rush. In between there was trap and skeet shooting, a few ducks, and then a shot that ended my hunting altogether.

I'd hit a beautiful big buck early one morning in the hills around Whitesburg, KY and followed his blood trail until I was too tired to go on. I knew that
I'd hurt him bad, but I also realized that he was a much better animal than me because even with his injuries he was still able to out distance me. I never did find him, and I haven't been hunting since.

I still carry a .38 Special in the boat with me for moccasin (I believe the Lord himself is sorry he ever created them), but I don't hunt anything anymore.
