Original growth Cypress, 800-1,000 yrs old, not cut because of lightning strike 30' circumferance. All of the healthy ones were cut in the 1920's and 30's. The largest sawmill at that time in the US was in Pearlington, MS. Only around 25 of these left in this area of the Honey Island Swamp. The area was deforested by Katrina 10% Cypress and Tupelo Gum and 90% of the Water Oaks, White Oaks and Sweet Gum. The canopy of the forest is GONE where Katrina visited.
