Re: Bendix magneto internal timming

I thought O-435 timing should be 20degrees BTDC. There were a lot of those engines in Tx back in the day.

Re: Oil coolers

Put a temp. probe where the oil drain plug is. I have found oil Temp. is a few degrees above water temp. . An oil cooler is another point of failure, how ever small. If you don't need a cooler avoid the potential problem.

Re: EGT Probe 540 Lycoming.

The probes should be 1-1/2 to 2 inches from exhaust flange. I have run exhaust temp on both aircraft and automotive engines. One each side is not ideal but still worth it.

Re: 572 bbc reliability

The BBC needs more timing than the advocated 32 degrees. Gasses are still burning when the exhaust valve opens causing the valve to over heat, becoming an ignition source. Leading to engine failures. I run 32 degrees mechanical timing and 4 degrees vacuum advance .At WOT the advance goes away . Went...

"What make and who build a the most reliable motor in the 650 to 750 hp. One that will run 1000 hours with out failure" Mast Motor ports engine would be my choice. And they are close.

Re: carbon fiber prop for corvair

When they were building "Mud Hen airboats " they used metal props. off of airplane that were un- air worthy. Shortened and reduced pitch . The wood props were 28 inches of pitch.

Re: timing and vacuum advance

ZZ 502. I run a vacuum advance limited to 4 degrees WOT is 32 degrees and cruse is 36 degrees. Lower ET and fuel consumption was the advantage. 550 hours on the engine.. I used exhaust temp. and A/F to tune the engine.

Re: LS3 Oil Cooler / Oil Change

I was considering an oil cooler for my 502. Put a temp. probe in the oil drain pan and temps were at water temp. or barley above. Did the same test on my son's 1998 Tahoe (350) and oil temp. 250 to270 and it had a factor cooler. I think an engine in an auto. can't get ride of the heat. Temps under t...
