Re: Lycoming 260 to 300

I would suggest a set of 10:1 forged pistons vs going through all of that, also have a 10° advance cam installed.

Re: Converting from car engine to aircraft.

15' is a bit big for an aircraft conversion from the DD caddy, I would suggest selling the E185 and buy a gearbox and a bigger prop.

Re: Gpu220 losing power at full throttle

I like to run a purolator inline pre filter, the glass type that has the replacement element, vs the inlet filter in the bowl, you can see the trash buildup to know the water separator needs replacing.

Re: Hull Taper

I usually go to 2" on say a 6 cylinder sled or car engine powered hull, 4 cylinder I will kick it to about 2-3/4 but not drastic, more so at the stringers.

Re: Hull Taper

When I have the sides bent, say for a 6'8" x 12' the rear will be bent at 8" the front will be at 13",that puts a 5" taper into the hull per side.

Get 10:1 forged pistons, you will have lots more power using up all of the 100 octane.

Re: backfire through carb

390 is 4V 350 is 2V, now, you need a #31 squirter, the cam from a 500 Holley and most likely need to have the pilot jets drilled out a bit.

Re: 1"carb spacer ??

To be honest, a 390 Holley 4V will perform much more efficient than the 500 2V, yes it will need the secondary metering plate kit, a set of 68 jets in the primary and around 70/72 In the secondary metering, more money but in the long run it will pay for itself in fuel and performance.

Achilles heel of these engines is the thrust bearing, they were never designed to spin a prop.
