Re: Lycoming valve issues

Valve seat is not ground correctly, the seating area is too far out to the outer edge of the valve face, the seating area should be central to the valve face, I will try to find a picture to illustrate it for you, the edge of the valve on the seat, with likely bad contact full circle of seat caused ...

If it has the zenith carb on it still I would suggest a Holley 500, and a modified intake to mount it on, where are you located? I can fab up a manifold for you.

Re: Hull Size for 0540

I reference the bottom for size, it does not run on the top, you can measure a manufacturer's hull at the bottom that they claim to be 8' x whatever length, and the bottom measures 6'8"wide.

If you have access to a press brake with v block lower and round upper dies that is 14' long I can walk you through a design that will perform flawlessly.

Re: What are these bolts?

Use the bellhousing flange bolt hole, cut the unused tab off the starter bracket to use the other bellhousing hole, bolt a piece of angle to that and build from there.

Re: Mechanical Fuel pump questions 220 GPU

You will likely never need to replace it again, keep in mind, these engines sat for years after being pulled from service, the diaphragms had residual fuel in them on last run, so they dried out like any other fuel system component. The original hoses on most were petrified when we tore the packette...

You have to use the base from the GPU pump, the spring is the pressure regulating factor.

225 slant 6, or look up 50s corvette fuel pump rebuild kit, you have to find the one with the 6 check valves.

Re: Warp drive question

Not to sound like a smart alec, but it sounds as if you have 7/16 bolts with 5/8 hex heads, that said the torque will be 50-55 ft-lb, now the question is, does the prop hub have 1/2 holes or 7/16 holes, if 7/16 great, if 1/2 you need to get tubing to Bush the bolt to bore size, along with the drivers.

Been using weldwood contact cement ever since I was trained to 35 years ago, you can knock out rivets on a boat that old and still have to pry the material apart, just redid a boat that was built prior to my employment at Don Davis' shop.

Re: Suggestions on "temporary" oil for 220GPU?

Run it but just have in mind that the springs will eventually fail, not all at once but here and there, they are easy enough to change on engine with compressed air holding valves shut (STAY CLEAR OF PROP OR REMOVE IT) if you get it running good, enjoy! Seems you know enough to get you back to the l...

Re: Suggestions on "temporary" oil for 220GPU?

Ok, I watched your videos, the rust on the valve springs will eventually cause them to break, I would highly suggest you pull all 6 cylinders, have them overhauled, may have to take them out to plus .015 if they aren't already, i bet cylinder bores are pitted, have springs replaced, put a set of 6405...

Add 1 qt of transmission fluid to current oil, get it hot before you drain it off then run a oil change with 15w40 and 1 qt trans fluid, let it run till it gets hot, drain it while hot and blended, the detergent will allow it to mix in, run aeroshell after that.

Re: Aluminum hull refit

Roger that. I was told to put steelflex on before poly to help to keep corrosion to a minimum. It came from a guy with a riveted hull. His reason was because his bottom is 6061 alloy and keep the corrosion at bay. Steelflex is a bottom coating, it does not flex as stated, the elastomeric roof coati...

It will seal the bottom, all riveted hulls leak in one way or another, the roof sealant wicks into the seams and rivet pockets.

I like john's comment, they also make a 390 4 brl that would work and if you go with a 500 get the ultra it has the adjustable air bleeds and emulsion
My bad, meant the 390 4V not the 350 2V
