Re: missing airboat found at race

You dig it, I see, Buckshot... you must have come from that same school, although we can all be victims from the "punks", especially when our guard is down. Alabama got the same law that Florida got a few years back... about "Protecting property/personal safety by deadly force".....

Re: missing airboat found at race

The scary part is that they were at a regularly sanctioned airboat event. I hope that's a "head's up" that nobody is safe from theft or shady characters. Watch all your belongings carefully down the sights of a .357, works for me... especially if you go out with said gear in a shoulder hol...

Re: Death to off road vehicles???!!!

Why isn't anyone trying to run them off the beach and fill in the opulent neighborhoods cut into mangrove/cypress marsh all over the state? Like I've mentioned before on this site, it's only a matter of time until they decide to "reposition" the levees westward to support urban sprawl on t...

Re: Input from Veteran and airboat enthusiasts

BTW, I see that you're into UAVs... I recently applied to a major defense contractor as a Aircraft Electrician. I am currently a Marine Electrician... The company (division) is manufacturing UAVs. I don't know much about it, other than building radio controlled aircraft/airboats, but it seems to be ...

Re: Input from Veteran and airboat enthusiasts

The main drawback of your design for most airboaters is the corrugated surface of the bottom of the hull. Traditionally, airboats are meant to run in almost dry environments or completely dry altogether, hence the completely flat bottom. I was going to build a Jon/Airboat a few months back, but quit...

Re: got screwed over

It's sad, but you have to get your mind right to accept that everyone is a crook (I know that sounds absurd, but it's true)... most people look out for #1 in the end, hell everyone is guilty of that to some degree... There is a song that sums it up and I have always remembered the lyric: "You'r...

Re: bolt or or weld seat package ??

I was thinking about an adjustable bolt-on seating pattern if I ever get around to acquiring an airboat or building one. My thought was to allow height in my seating, given riding conditions. Where I live on the Mobile ,AL Bay/Delta, lower seats would be good for the transition from deep to shallow ...

Ouch... you could probably rework it for less than that if you have a few "Grease Monkey" friends who know what they're doing and are willing to do it for cases of beer.

Re: center of gravity

You never see many really "low center of gravity" boats out there, other than a few minis or VW rigs. Anyone ever considered mounting the engine low in the hull with a belt (redrive) system to the prop hub? I know some torque would be lost in this setup, but the places you could go could b...

Haha, I flew a Florida flag on the power pole at my home in Alabama until one of the hurricanes messed it up. At any rate the "Old Florida" panhandle ran almost to Hattiesburg, MS back in the day. I hail from Deerfield Beach, but my parents couldn't deal with the urban sprawl, so we went t...

Re: got screwed over

You have to be smarter than the seller, no matter what you're buying. Homework pays in dividends, and you may effectively "steal" the item if you make the seller feel ignorant in a 'round about, respectful way. Hell, I bought 3 Mercury outboards a 1967 9.8 HP, a 1978 9.8 HP and a 1973 50 H...

Re: Input from Veteran and airboat enthusiasts

That boat looks almost factory built... kinda like the Spyder Airboats out of Louisiana. At any rate, great craftsmanship on your part! I would probably utilize 2 rudders, slightly wider than what you have, maybe even a taper from the transom to the upper end, with the height stopping a little more ...

Re: bolt or or weld seat package ??

I had an ultralight aircraft designer explain engine mounts to me this way: "Think of a cardboard box with the lids open, you can flex it a lot, right? Now fold the lids in... much more sturdy, right? With engine mounts or any mount for that matter that may hold weight or stress, all it require...

Bondo,

I've also heard that "Cracker" came from the corn farmers in the "Big Bend" region who primarily "cracked" corn for use as cattle feed.
