Re: Building a 70k airboat

Different strokes for different folks as they say. I understand a lot of folks don't have the means/ability/room to build and work on their own boats, but in my case, I take a lot of pride in the fact that I build most of my own stuff, from my airboats to my trucks and cars. I make a pretty decent l...

Re: Air filter size

We run a "Cadillac batwing" style cleaner on my Son's small block. Should he get caught in the rain, he can just spin the air cleaner 180 degrees so the intake duct faces the back. Not the best setup, but works fine.

Re: Reflecting on Maiden Voyage

As far as who to call? My suggestion is to join one (or more) of the many airboating clubs in Florida. Post on here when and where you are riding, to see if any others may be riding that particular day. Another good source is Southern Airboat Facebook page if you do the Facebook thing. Always better...

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

Sounds like your initial disappointment turned 180 degrees! There was no doubt in my mind it would perform much better than your previous setup! Like mentioned previously, I think there's still some left on the table as far as the camshaft selection, but sounds like your pretty happy with the water ...

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

As far as BPE goes there are guys who get by running them but more have problems as they are not built for the severe duty application an airboat exposes it to. My neighbor runs the same BPE383 so they will work if you take timing out and run blended fuel. Usually it is the Pistons or flat tappet c...

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

We found the same thing tearing down our Blueprint 383, broken ring land on #8, piston skirts were scuffed pretty bad, only difference was ours has Keith Black hypereutectic pistons. We were able to minimize the damage and got by replacing the 1 piston, and bead blasted the others, replaced the cran...

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

I know it is pretty hard to believe, but the best place to start on a DD application is the stock cam because torque off idle is what puts a smile on your face. You really have to give up something to make a motor make max torque below 3K. You went solid lifters (I assume roller) so that gives some...

Re: Wild Country Running

Problem as you probably aware, is the range (fuel). It would take probably a 15' - 18' boat to carry your load (not including fuel). You would definately need car motor/gearbox combo. The car motor guys will chime in (my boat is a small aircraft powered boat), but I'm guessing you would need at leas...

Re: new ford 7.3 gas engine

As far as the physical size, yes, but would like to see real world hp/tq numbers 1st. Also, the demand for a gear/belt box would have to be there before the manufacturers would support it, before it could become a viable option on an airboat.
