repainting a fiberglass hull

I am planning on repainting my fiberglass hull again. This last car paint didn't hold up at all. I used a single stage paint with no clear. I am thinking about shooting it with gel coat this time and putting he work into sanding it smooth and putting a few coats of clear over it. My thoughts are 3-5...

Re: Another 500 DD

Caddy is a low rpm torque motor. I ran a 74" Q when I was DD and it ran really good. Ran dry OK on a 78 15' Panther Aluminum Hull with heavy rigging. (Dry in Nebraska anyway LOL)Good Timing chain set for reliability advanced 4*. There are some cams out there for DD application if you check around th...

Re: Gen 6 454 upgrades?

I put an air gap intake on it and gained nothing over the single plane intake that was on it. I'm looking into a ZZ502 cam in it but getting confused about what other valve train parts I'd need to do the swap.

Re: Gen 6 454 upgrades?

I have and eventually plan a 496 build with it but for now due to circumstances I'm looking for advice on some easy (cheap) bolt on's for it. I'm wondering if the mismatch on the intake to heads could cause me some loss. (square port single plane on vortec small oval port heads) I'm just not sure th...

Gen 6 454 upgrades?

So my fancy engine fell through (sent money received nothing) so I found a gen VI Vortec 454 cheap and ran that. Obviously less power than my Caddy but, I built a new stand and cage for the BBC I was supposed to get so I just ran it. Upgraded to a 2.38 Ox drive to turn my 80" S 3 blade. It does OK b...

Re: Cadillac 500 vs BBC 454 motor mounts

you might need a different drive plate for the drive but the motor mounts are not the same. The stand will need to be modified to switch from one to the other.

Re: Cadillac 500, torque-prop

you need to tell us what you have modified on your caddy. If it is stock don't turn past 4K for sure. If you have a good shaft rocker setup and upgraded valve springs 4500 is no problem. with the 1.77 you may be better off with a 3 blade R on it. with the 2.12 on mine I started with a 2 blade 80" S ...

Re: Cadillac 500, torque-prop

My superwides liked 1800 rpm or above. I had a 2.12 rotator with a 2 blade on my 472 set on 2 turning 1900 on the prop. Set on 1.5 I ran a 3 blade at 1850 and it pushed ok.

Re: Newbie 1979 Panthar15’ 454 big block direct drive need help

I had a 78 Panther 15' aluminum. I ran a dd 472 Caddy on it and it would run the ground a little. But no way would it dry load on the trailer. Do you have poly on the bottom? If not it needs slick or something applied as bare aluminum is really sticky on the ground.

Re: Gear reduction to belt drive

engine stand will need to be rebuilt for it. The shaft to shaft dimension is different between the gear and belt drives. The belt drives (at least Centrury) lower the engine quite a bit more than the gear units. Other than that the rigging and cage should be good. Are you in Nebraska or Iowa? Whitet...

I will try to add some timing and see if that helps. I know it is still increasing around 3500 rpm so I might need to get a spring kit for the HEI as well.

454 Issue

I bought a used Vortec 454 to run temporarily on my boat until my "built" engine is complete. I put an old Weand single plane intake on it with my old Holley 870 street avenger. Also put a new HEI distributor in it. I run a 2.38 Ox and 3 blade 80" S prop. I had it set on 1.5 ish and could turn about...

Re: Cleaing Polymer

that works on the bottom. I actually took my dads boat up and down a gravel ramp a few times. He didn't like me doing that but it did help. We both have poly on the sides of our hulls though with buildup that just looks bad LOL.

Cleaing Polymer

My boat sat in the river for a while last year and it ended up with a build up of hard water minerals or something. It stuck to the poly on the bottom and the sides. I tried a pressure washer to remove it but it didn't come off. Has anyone had similar issues like this and what would be a good way to...

Re: Need help with 454

Try the 2.3 in the belt drive to see if that helps. I run a 3 blade S 80" with my mild 472 Caddy with a 2.12 reduction. Set on 1.5 ish turning 4200 on engine. I just had a cam in a basically stock engine with a shaft rocker setup. I can't imagine my HP would have been more than your 425hp BBC.

Re: is my boat set up right ????????

Best advice is to find out which prop you have and find the safe rpm limit. Then play with it until you find what you like. Don't exceed the limit rpm from the prop manufacturer though. Take pitch out will increase rpm and adding pitch drops rpm. I would assume you have an R blade which has a safe l...

Re: is my boat set up right ????????

Depends on what prop you have... the S series works best for me at around 1850-2150 prop rpm, the R's seem to work better around 2100-2300 prop rpm. Multiply the prop rpm by the reduction ratio to find ideal engine rpm. You are 2-1 so double the prop rpm to find target engine rpm. They are all diffe...

Re: Will 3 blade help

confirm your prop model... NGQ only comes left hand rotation. With the Rotator you would need a right hand rotation prop. I'm also thinking the R's and bigger aren't available that short without being trimmed a bunch.

BBC Oil Cooler opinions?

I am changing to a big block chevy on my boat but never ran an oil cooler on the caddy. Just wondering what the consensus is for oil coolers on big block chevy engines on an airboat? If it is a good idea what is a good one to run that won't break the budget?

Thanks,

Dan

I ordered 2 gallons of webbing so we should have plenty to play with until we get it figured out. I talked to them as well about colored gel coat to match my paint if I can't get it to work out like I want. We have 2 big boats and 1 little one to do so I hope I have plenty.

I am actually just getting started on my new rigging. I decided to switch engines and will be going from a Cadillac to a big block Chevy. More work for me now LOL.
