Re: GPU Help

Ducarra aviation. If its that far apart you oughta finish tearing it down so you can look at the crank and have the rods trued and rebushed. As well as turning the crank and going back with new bearings and seals. Just my opinion.

Re: Lycoming 260 to 300

Rocker arms, push rod tubes, headers, and I believe the pistons all have to be changed. Also I think the intake tubes need to be longer as well.

Re: Continental IO-360 Oil Temp

The engine in the aircraft has baffles attached o it to essentially ram air through the oil cooler. They typically run hot on airboats because nothing ducts air to the cooler. You can remove the cooler and make a plate that separates the flow out from the flow back into the engine. Then you can run ...

Re: Lycoming O/360 losing oil pressure under load

Do the easy stuff first. Pull the oil pressure relief and check for trash on the seat. Then if that's not the problem drain the oil and pull the screen. I've seen these collapse and cause oil pressure problems.

Re: 122 tooth flywheel

Panther (Classic) Airboats used to sell a chevy 350 flywheel that was modified to fit the 220. Then you put a chevy starter on it. Don't know if they still do but maybe give them a call.

Re: O435 oil temperature / relief valve

My brother had the same problem. I tore everything apart having anything to do with the oil cooling system. Here is what I learned. The 320, 360, and 540 engines have a oil cooler bypass valve or a vernitherm. One or the other. The oil cooler bypass on the 3 engines mentioned bypass more oil to the ...

Re: Lycoming 0360 idles but won’t run above idle

I would try tapping on the side of the bowl with a small hammer or wrench with the fuel pump turned on. Sounds to me like the float stuck in the closed position and wont allow fuel into the bowl. Just a thought but it's easy to try before you disassemble the carb.

Re: 220 GPU Kill Switch

Actually from the pics I'm seeing you have a pe150 continental packette engine that at one time in its life had a second mag added and the cylinders drilled for a second mag. Ok...... Here is my suggestion. Remove the mag on the port side of the engine. Keep mag in dry cool area. Enjoy the boat whil...

Re: 220 GPU Kill Switch

The part sticking ot of the case that has the 2 screws holding it in is the condenser. It should have a threaded stud sticking out of it, It appears this has been broken. There are 4 screws holding the cap on that supports the condenser. Remove them, then remove the condenser and order a new one. Th...

Could be an o-320 as well. You would need to measure the cylinder length to know for sure.

Re: 540 short jug info.

The theory behind this setup is the piston goes down farther in the cylinder. Thus bringing more air into the cylinder. It also rises higher in the cylinder. Thus making higher compression. I have even seen them with the 540 rods installed. The rods have to be machined in order to turn the rod bolts...

Re: This is an O290 GPU , yes?

I feel confident saying its an o290 but it could actually be a flight o290. The ground power had a peculiar oil sump on it. The carb actually bolted to it just below the mags. Also the gpu wouldnt accept a lycoming flywheel. However the case could be shaved to make the lycoming flywheel fit. These m...

Re: Help identifying lyc

The o360 crank weights are a larger diameter than the o320. That's what hits. Sometimes depending on the casting the big end of the rod will hit as well.

Re: Help identifying lyc

So it sounds like it is what your saying it is. A narrow deck 320 case ground internally to clear a 360 crank and rods. Then 360 cylinders to top it off. Carburated makes it 180 h.p.

Re: 0470GPU Prop Rotation question

To the person above that is trying to run a 72 x 42 wood prop on a 220 gpu. That prop is way to big. That is the same prop I ran on a built 540 year ago. I would be surprised if your able to turn that thing 2300 rpm. Get one of the newer ground adjustable props so you can play with it some and you w...

Re: 0360 pistons

Go online and look up combustion technologies. They make straight valve 10 to 1 pistons. If memory serves me right they are about 125.00 each. I dont think lycoming makes a 10 t0 1 straight valve piston. They do for the angle valve cylinder. Hope this helps.

Re: Lycoming Motor id

prop size tells me it is a o290 bottom end with o435 cylinders. Keep an eye on the crankshaft flange. They tend to crack at the flange to the crankshaft attach area. As seen in the previous photos. other than that they are great little engines.

Looks like a o290/125hp with narrow deck vo435 cylinders. It has a wood prop. What size is it? I'll bet it's a 66x32 or a 68x32. Post the size and we can tell you the h.p.

Dont fight it. Just pull the valve covers, rockers, pushrods and tubes. Youll be less frustrated at the end of the repair. Ive made wrenches, modified sockets, you name it I've tried it. It's just a pain in the a$$ and you end up scratching the heck out of the tubes. Just make sure you label the pus...
