Re: Buying first airboat

That is a lot of boat and without a gear box, not a lot of motor. It will run ok for what you describe, but that is about it. Polymer is for running dry ground and to protect the hull. “Needing” poly depends on how well you are able to avoid the oysters in your neck of the woods.

Re: I'm Building 2 Stossel Boats with High Torque Motors

I will be well under the $70K bogey with 2 great running boats. It just takes 5 years total.

It is helpful that my youngest just Graduated college. Now I can focus on important stuff!

Re: I'm Building 2 Stossel Boats with High Torque Motors

I had to rebuild the cage on my latest boat after I stuck a frog gig in the prop. (I also had to get a new frog gig) The cage was DOM so I thats what I put back. It was the first time I used it and I was impressed. It welded easier and worked the same as conduit and was lighter in the end. I was at...

Re: I'm Building 2 Stossel Boats with High Torque Motors

That’s cool. Are they older boats that were lightly used, or were they never rigged? Both are 30 year old hulls, rode hard and put up wet. They were daily work boats at a gator farm in Louisiana. The Ugly Duck is on at least the second set of rigging because I know Bob Stossel didn't build that hea...

...buy 6 or 8 airboats, different sizes, different props, different engines and have it all and have more fun than you can stand. LOL That don't sound like fun to me, way above my personnel toy limit. I'd never get to use the 3-4 running airboats because I'm too busy working on the 3-4 that don't r...

Re: Prop VS Motor: Airgator, LS2 6.0, Sensenich NEED ADVICE

Sarros, Adding the lower bung is a good choice for sure, a flooded suction is the only way an HP pump like that Turbine (Rolling Cell) Bosch pump will survive on it's own. Those things cavitate bad without positive pressure on the inlet (note that they label them In/Out, try and find "Suction&q...

I'm Building 2 Stossel Boats with High Torque Motors

During my last ride at Mack's, the sled just didn't slide right. Climbed under it when I got home and found that the trailing edge of my poly is lifting off the rivets, time to take her out of service. Luckily I already had a plan, so it's time to implement. I have two identical 14x7 High Side, open...

Re: Prop VS Motor: Airgator, LS2 6.0, Sensenich NEED ADVICE

How much fuel can you burn in an hour? If you are burning 50 gph at WOT you need to get off and run, cause it's leaking bad and about to burn flat up. Put a Facet 50 gph gold flo on the tank to feed your HP pump and you will be golden, at least until one of them shifts the bed. The facet will pull g...

Re: Headlamp issues

Bad connections won’t cause the problem described, they would limit the voltage, making it run dim, cool and last forever. Those lamps are only rated for 25 hours at 13 volts. Run them at higher volts and they are cooking. The bulb should draw 8-9 amps, which should be fine on a 15 amp AC type plug,...

Olympic National Park is an awesome place, it’s like Florida rainy season without the sweat. The first time I went there I kept laughing about the signs on the road that said “Warning Beach Logs Can Kill”. They show a stick figure of a giant log crashing down on a swimmer. It was a joke to me until ...

Oh, and I dropped the timing to 32, it was at 36. Might try to bring it back up and see if it picks up rpm. My old notes say go back to 36 and try 38. But Hdsadey is right, give it time to settle first before changing anything. Just don't give it too much time, you don't want her to settle on old l...

Re: How much weight can you carry

Those coast guard recommendations tell you how many people or how much weight to be safe. Since airboats are inherently not safe, the sticker could only say 0 passengers!!! This I agree with. I have one buddy (retired NYer of course) that mentioned being interested in an airboat ride and asked if i...

Same thing with any SFI flex plate for a Cadillac. If you use a titanium coated step drill it takes about 5 minutes to open it up enough for the bolts on the three holes. Some guys also encounter issues with the washers not laying flat due to the plates design. I have ground edges off washers makin...

I use the crap out of no-smoke and leak stop additives in my swamp buggy motor, but that thing runs on 50% water in the oil half the time anyway, I treat it like a red headed step child so anything that keeps it running vs. swapping another motor is game on for me. Re: Aluminum Hull Repair/Rebuild

To complete the discussion of material strength, realize that the primary issue of concern is the ability of the hull material to absorb impact energy and rebound. Luckily, for a sheet of Aluminum on the bottom of the hull, impact energy capability is a function of yield strength multiplied by thick...
