Re: Engine Coolant Burp

Not sure 200-210 is the answer. I believe the higher temps from the manufacturer has to do with emissions. My 13 Silverado runs 210 no matter what I'm doing. I like to see mine running between 180 and 200. Fitech sets the closed loop at 172. I run a 180 stat. I do however believe 160 is too cold, b...

Re: Engine Coolant Burp

200-210? I’ll call bs on that all day. Mine don’t touch 190-200 and a water thunder won’t touch 175. So I guess all of Dave’s engines have fouled plugs and water in the oil. Stick to a/c’s I didn't think there would be a consensus, but GM seems to agree. Like I said, thumb through the engine status...

Re: Engine Coolant Burp

Not sure that CBM doesn't require a thermostat, may have been the choice of first owner. 10-4 Dockside, I don't want to bad mouth someone that does not deserve it for sure. Had an old guy tell me years ago that the ideal engine wouldn't need any cooling, it would be perfectly insulated and just tak...

Re: Engine Coolant Burp

It was built by CBM out of California. Never had a thermostat. With a total of 80 run hours. It always ran about 160 degrees. Just added CBM to my black list. HD is right, 160 is way too low. Check your plugs, I bet they are black with soot running rich. Put a thermostat in that thing, at least a 1...

Re: 350 DD boat

The 305 heads have smaller combustion chambers so you get higher compression. Depending on how willing you are to pay for premium fuel, you are looking for 58 cc chambers and flat top (max compression) or dished pistons (a bit lower compression). Doomed pistons will put you into race or Aviation fue...

My local NAPA only has 100W. I have bought at the airport, Fast Break in Okeechobee and elsewhere. The price does vary for sure. $75 was just off the cuff. Here is one option at $79 per case plus shipping: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/aeroshelloils6.php?gclid=CjwKCAjwg-DpBRBbEiwAEV...

Re: Different spark patterns

Your dad was starting on the Impulse mag. The impulse has springs, weights etc. that retards timing to about 0 degrees BTDC for start up. Once the engine speed comes up, centrifugal force takes the impulse out of play and the mag goes to the run settings, typically 25 deg BTDC. Once running, he turn...

Garmin Drive track is an option for a full blooded GPS system with a big screen. Used for tracking dogs, put the collar on your buddies boat and you never have to search for him again.

Re: Thrust bearings? Aircraft vs. Automotive

I have often thought about some type of external thrust bearing. The problem I have come up with is having to put a spacer block between the flexplate and crank to allow a thrust bearing to be in between. On sbc with the starter bolted to the block poses a problem with pinion gear engagement. Sbf i...

That’s 8mm film. It is probably scotch tape. Scotch tape and a razor blade, that’s how we used to edit video.

Time to revive a good thread. Apollo 11 was ground breaking, but Apollo 17 was the most awesome launch, the first night launch and the last moon shot in 1972. Re: Lycoming 4cyl

Standard bore is 4.875" I believe. The cylinders may be over bored or chrome'd back to spec, all of which drives piston and ring selection. You will need to confirm what you have to know what to do with it.

Good luck!

Flange under flywheel, or belhousing flange for a better term. You got the eye for sure! I see it now. So do y'all think the spare cylinders I got are 435 cylinders, if so what is involved in putting them on my 290 ? Maxx, 435 is the 6 cylinder version of the 290. Chances are that the cylinders are...

Re: Lycoming 4cyl

O-290 GPU, has a flange under the flywheel I'm sure. John, I'm curious, what are you seeing in the pics that say this is a 290? Valve covers and external hex nuts look like a wide flange 320 or 360 to me. I'm not sure about the oil pan. The valve cover on the spare cylinder matches the O-435/290 st...

Simplifying things for clarity. Deleted the SAE figures, just metric. Do you dispute the following? 500 Ft-lbs, converted to 678 N-m and plotted against kw.

I can see how it might work out different in metric, now. but the HP vs tq equation remains the same. This is so wrong as to be laughable. You clearly do not know what you are talking about. If you were to provide scales in proper increments, you would see that the relationship remains the same. Yo...

Re: IO 520 Build on 12 foot Hamant

Hardtail, Engine/prop trim and weight adjustments on an Airboat are the same as a kicker boat. Point the prop up (engine aft higher) and you lift the nose with more potential for hop. Point the prop down (engine aft down) and you push the nose down. Weight is the same, you would want to move weight ...

Hardtail,

No doubt you want to make sure the hull is true, but I assume that you looked into that during the build. Assuming hull is good, pitch the aft end of the engine down a bit and run it again.
