Re: LS DD maiden voyage

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but curiosity got me and I got bored after two pages. Was waterthunder able to develop a thrust bearing to run a DD LS? I had been wondering the same thing. I thought I saw a post back on FB a while ago where WT said they had a meeting with a big name manufacturing co...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

My old notes say go back to 36 and try 38. But Hdsadey is right, give it time to settle first before changing anything. Just don't give it too much time, you don't want her to settle on old lady going to church mode. My experience with automotive EFI systems is about 30 miles of driving is pretty s...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

Oh, and I dropped the timing to 32, it was at 36. Might try to bring it back up and see if it picks up rpm.

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

Drilled the hole, it was still creeping up to 230 at idle, decided to give it some rpm and see if I could force the bubbles out. Worked like a charm, idling at 190 degrees and cruising at 186-188. It ran awesome at idle, cruise, and WOT. Picked up 100rpm on the trailer. I know it takes time to learn...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

On my Windsor I drilled a small hole on the side of the stat. It sure helped with the air purge. There is a funnel from Lisle tools that uses an adapter to the radiator cap that will let the system run and bleed off air. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/lil-24680/overview/ I also run a product ca...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

Hmmmm. I can’t speak for the EFI deal. I want the setup you have but don’t feel like messing with it. My carb setup runs a 165* thermostat with no holes or anything drilled. I added a bottle of a Lucas coolant product with my dex cool coolant. It runs at 170 to 180. Will rise to 200 if you shit dow...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

What temp is it getting to. Took a little bit to get the air out of my system. Let it sit for a few with the burp tank cap off. It would burp and need some more fluid. Ran it on the trailer for a bit and topped it off. Topped it off a week later before ride and it was good to go It crept up to 206,...

Up and running! It’s getting hot though, I think there’s air in the cooling system.

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

I would think any system that can get enhanced data would tend to be more likely to forecast and respond more accurately to changing conditions. Hence the factory systems having upstream and downstream sensors. Do the FI Tech sensors have a self heat cycle at start up ? That seems to be a fail poin...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

You will see when you run the dual plane KeyPine your gonna puddle fuel. Not a issue with the carburetor nothing to effect it, those fuel droplets just burn undetected but the EFI it's O2sensors and tune map will be effected. Maybe some of the systems have more forgiving software that is slower to ...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

A lot of user data in sites like this one. Guys who experienced lean conditions on certain cylinders using a dual plane, map issues and fuel degradation to seals etc. Something to think about maybe. http://cpgnation.com/forum/threads/ez-efi-2-0-injection-with-dual-plane-intake-vs-single-plane.25871...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

Carburetor required vacuum to draw and atomize fuel from a booster much like sucking from a straw. It needs a longer runner and velocity of air over the venturi. FI uses pump pressure and a injector to spray. When GM (Cadillac) tested and produced early manifold based FI they discovered the injecti...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

Reading through this thread has been interesting. There is a lot of old tech and info about EFI in here. worry about computers overheating, not being waterproof, failing components. Like we all forgot that we daily drive on efi in our cars for the last 30 years..Standalone computers arent much diff...

I got the go-efi, just the throttle body kit.

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

Have you checked the float drop not float level? If the needle and seat are to far down then the float will never drop far enough to allow the correct amount fuel in. I had it happen when my fuel pressure regulator went bad and spiked the pressure to my carb. Just a possibility I didn't check that,...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

Welp, I changed the jets that were in there (62 mains and secondary metering plate 64) all the way up to 70 mains and 74 secondary, 74 was the highest I had. No change in AFR, or max prop speed. The power valve went bad while I was testing and my AFR went straight to 10.0. I verified the power valve...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

Yup, and my buddy has been racing cars since he was 18 and thought he knew it all.... go ahead w that efi let us know how that works out No offense, but if I thought I "knew it all" I wouldn't be here asking questions. As for the EFI, there is a reason new cars don't come with carbs. I'm ...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

Or... get with Ed MAck or another carb expert do it right and preserve the motor! I hear you, but I put my own engine together at 18 years old. I'm not a newbie by any means, I've just never messed with carbs or the rpms a direct drive airboat runs. I have a wideband and a dyno (prop rpm), I'll get...

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

Thanks! I ended up digging more and found a metering plate conversion so I can put different jets in the secondary. I'm going to tune it best I can with the carb and run it for a while. I had a turbo LT1 camaro before so I'm honestly more comfortable with a laptop than a carb lol, but this boat is m...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

I have put those kits on many of those carbs. Yea, I don't think this guy knows what he's talking about. I ended up finding a quick fuel metering plate that has provisions for jets and comes with a modified float to clear the jets. It was on the Holley website. I emailed the tech back and he said &...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

Can't you tune it for WOT and use a piece of Wire in the IFR ( old school trick) to lean it out at idle but will be a little fat at cruise. Depending on the metering plate you can also drill and tap IFR and emulsion circuit for 6/32 brass blanks and drill them to the size you need. Just some though...
