Re: Need help!!! Boat won't crank!!
Pull the plugs and turn it over by hand. Did rain water get in the carb?

I agree. It is probably your alternator. Start there and let us know what you find.

Re: Gearbox talk
I have a 383 stroker also. I have 80 inch NGR blades with a 2.7 gearbox. I too think a 2.37 would be a better set up for that engine. I'll probably stay with the 2.7 for awhile. I got beat up pretty bad when I mention going to a lower ratio. Some think the 2.68 is the best for every set up. I run dr...

Re: Which Belt Drive Ratio ?????? Help!!
My boat is a 13.5 x 7 with no poly and I have the same engine as yours. I sold a rock crusher sounding gear box and went with a 2.7 Ballistic. I don't know about the R or S blades. Mine has the NGR blades pitched past the 3 mark. The Ballistic is quiet and only weighs 70 pounds. I hear the Ox Box is...

Re: Does NGR prop like pitch or RPM?
I agree Tony. I wish I had an 8 foot instead of a 7 foot wide hull. My prop was set at 16 degrees, so I increased it to 17.5 and I'm getting closer to your numbers, so, I'm happy with what I have.

Re: Does NGR prop like pitch or RPM?
Thanks Swamphunter45. That sounds like good advice. I'm not after speed but it would be sweet to cruise at 30-32 mph turning 2600 rpms, like Tony. The prop is only turning 970 rpms which seems incredible. I'll play with is some more and find the sweet spot. OneBFC, on my 383 I make 400 foot pounds a...

Re: Does NGR prop like pitch or RPM?
No problem Onebfc. I'll stick with the 2.7 and just add a little more pitch. How come you have a 2.3 on yours? Under what conditions is a 2.38 a good choice? Just curious.

Re: Does NGR prop like pitch or RPM?
I understand the torque multiplier but at some point propeller speed has to come in somewhere. Why does anyone use the 2.38 instead of the 2.68? Also, if the 2.68 is best all around, why not a 3.0? My boat came with a 2.0 gearbox and a 78x48 wood prop. Set the boat on the ground and it would go anyw...

Re: Does NGR prop like pitch or RPM?
Right now I cruise at 35 to 36 mph at 3600 rpm. At 4000 I'm at 40 mph. At 4000 rpm's the prop is spinning 1481 rpm's. With a 2.37 gearbox I could spin the prop 1481 rpms with the engine only running 3511 rpm's. It looks to me that a 2.37 gearbox would keep the same cruise and lower my engine rpms by...

Re: Does NGR prop like pitch or RPM?
I could go to 82 inch and then I'm out of room for the pancake cage. I can make a new cage but why not just increase the prop speed by lowering the ratio? More prop speed means more thrust. I still feel like I'm missing something. Why do people use the 2.38 instead of 2.68?

Re: Does NGR prop like pitch or RPM?
Thanks Dave for the reply. I like how quiet the prop is. I was just thinking I might be able to get the same performance out of it if I changed to a 2.37 instead of the 2.7 and take some pitch out. I'm already at the 3 mark. I was thinking the 2.37 gearbox would spin the prop faster and improve over...

Re: Does NGR prop like pitch or RPM?
My max rpm is 5200. I'll add a little more pitch and see if that gives me the cruise Tony has. My engine is 450 HP or maybe a little less. It hasn't been dyno checked. 2600 cruise is what speed? The prop is only turning 970 rpms. At 3500 it still only turning 1305 rpms. You must have a lot of pitch ...

Re: Does NGR prop like pitch or RPM?
7 foot wide hull and no polly. I'm used to aircraft engines where the faster you turn the prop the more thrust you get. With the 2.7 at 3600 rpm I'm only turning the prop a little over 1300 rpm. The prop is rated to 2800. I just wonder if there is an advantage to go to a 2.38 ratio and turn the prop...

Re: Does NGR prop like pitch or RPM?
Sorry Tony, I thought my signature showed my set up. It is a 13.6 Lazer hull with a SBC 383 stroker that puts out 425 horse. I currently have a 2.7 Ballistic gear drive and an 80 inch NGR 3 blade Prop. Does that help?

Does NGR prop like pitch or RPM?
I have less than 20 hours on my prop, but to me it seems it should put out more thrust for a 3 blade prop. I have it pitched at the 3 mark and I'm getting 35 mph at 3600 rpms. I run mostly deep water. I wonder if I should put a little more pitch into it or to look at going from a 2.7 to a 2.38 gear ...

Re: BALLASTIC GEAR BOX?
Shane, I called all the numbers and still no response back. I'm not having any issues with the box but I don' think the gear ratio is correct for my ride. I have mine pitched at the 3 mark and I still have to turn 3600 rpm to cruise over 30 mph. I don't think the prop is turning fast enough. At 3600...

Re: Cruising speed rpm?
I cruise at 3000 RPMs too. I just cruise around 30 mph GPS with the prop pitched on the 2 mark and I cruise 40 mph with the pitch set on the 3 mark. I have no idea what I should set the prop at but I know I have plenty of engine for more pitch. I have a 2.7 to one gear box, so, at 3000 RPMs I'm only...

Re: Motor Reliablity
My question on the 2.7 to 1 I have is, what should my max RPM be and what should I cruise at? It just seems odd to me that with a 2.7 @ 5200 RPMs, I'm not even turning the prop at 2000 RPMs. The new NGR is rated to 2800 RPMs. I could never get close to that with my 383 SBC. The lower rpm is quiet th...

Re: Motor Reliablity
I may be a little slow but I still have no idea why I have a 2.7 drive instead of a 2.3 or a 2.5. What should I use for max rpm and what should I cruise at. I bought the boat with a 2 to 1 drive and a wood prop and it did all right but I wanted it to be better and quieter.

Starter Bolts came loose.
I have less than 10 hours since I replaced the starter. I guess I need to use Lock-tite on them. Yesterday my wife and I are tied up near shore fishing when we see a man on the other side of the river floating down stream, struggling and waving for help. I untie and start the boat to go save the guy...

Re: Gear Drive Help???
I do have a nice gearbox for the Chevy 350. It is a Precision 2:1 gear drive and includes the soft drive and flex plate. I also have a like new wood paddle prop that goes with it. I'd like to get $2000 for the pair. I'll even pay shipping. This came on my 383 boat and I upgraded to a Ballistic drive.

Re: looking for a used belt drive
If you want to go gearbox, I have a 2 to 1 Precision gearbox with soft drive available. I took it off my 383 SBC and it is in perfect condition. I also have the Sensenich paddle prop that went with it. I just upgraded to Ballistic gearbox and fiber prop. The prop has less than 25 hours since new. PM...
