Re: 496 vs 540 BBC

Sniper you been stuck on them ls motors for years now. You say Dave doesnt run them any more but if you look back through his posts even he agrees there's a point where a BBC is just a better choice. If my memory is right he said it was around 18 foot and this thread involves a 20ft boat. ALL engine...

Re: Big Block Aluminum Heads

I would go oval port. They make power lower in the rpm range. Rectangle ports work better on the higher end of the rpm range. I agree with loud mouse the victor jr intake is wrong. I'm a firm believer in the edlebrock rpm airgap intake for an airboat big or small block. An RV cam is never a good cam...

Re: Big Block Aluminum Heads

Aluminum is just for shedding weight?!?!? There are so many advantages to aluminum heads, weight is just one and is low on the totem pole. Picking the right head for what you have is paramount. Just saying you have a 454 and thinking of aluminum heads is not enough info for a rational opinion. So mu...

Re: Need help with 454

I agree that forged cranks are better but there's nothing wrong with the scat cranks in there kits for the hp and rpm range he is trying to use. I'm running a stock steel gm crank with zero issues. It's a damn good kit, especially for the price, 1349.00. It comes with the crank rods weisco forged pis...

Re: Need help with 454

For the stroker kit look at skip white performance. I used one of there 383 kits for a buddy last year and it's a damn nice kit!! I wouldn't hesitate to get another one of there kits again!! He sells aluminum heads and pretty much everything you will need at good prices. For the cam call comp cams a...

Re: Need help with 454

2.3 gear and 3 80 inch s blades are perfect for a 454 but you need a lil more power. As mentioned, look up crowhaters budget 496 build, that will give you what you need at a reasonable cost. I run a 454,stock steel crank,7/16 gm dimple rods, JE flat top pistols custom FELBER cam and head work. Edlebro...

Re: 4 blade vs 5 blade for heavy load

I've never put it on the dyno so I can't give definitive answers on torque and hp but it's right around 550hp. It has felber mild ported heads and his 496 cam in it. The 2.3 gear was a great all around gear. Put plenty of pitch in the prop and went where i wanted no issues. It was a narrow gear and ...

Re: 4 blade vs 5 blade for heavy load

I run the same boat with an all iron bbc. I have a 2.68,wish I'd have kept the 2.3 but. I have a 3 blade S and the boat does everything you could want. Mine is set up single front triple rear. Even with 650hp I don't think you could turn a 5 blade S with enough pitch to warrant the expence. 3 or 4 b...

Re: FWC post about 15 year program for lake maintenance

Not sure why they would apply for the lakes on the St Johns here in brevard. They are under er st.johns water management and they seem to burn and spray as the please. Of course both being state agencies, one would plant something and then the other would spray it to kill it!! One would want some hyd...

Yes they did,I think they still make them. They where PSR blades. I had a set years ago. They worked well. A whirl wind hub looks very different from a water walker or sensenich hub.

Re: head leak

I would clean it real good and pressure test it and see exactly where it's coming from and fix it before I took it out again. A small leak can turn big fast!! I've seen the intake gasket leak slightly at the bottom and run down and look like a head gasket before. Should be easy now but could get rea...

Scott swartley in malabar was doing processing and still is as far as I know. If you don't mind the drive to cocoa you can go to Scott hall, his number is 3213023893. Both Scott's do a good job,I'll have to see if I can post swartley number. He owns custom adventures, you could look him up.

Re: Which big block - 454 or 496?

Agree with most of what was said. But,are you talking about a stoked 454 to a 496 or the 8.1 gm 496? There very differant engines and in my opinion the 8.1 is a waist of money and time. There's not much aftermarket stuff out there for them. But if you stroke a 454 with good heads, forged pistons a go...

Re: Underwriting help from Casey Insurance Group

A full cage is by far the safest in my opinion, unless having to work on the boat in the field cause you have to usually climb inside it to work on the motor, and it keeps people off the exhaust so they don't get burnt. I think all for hire boats have to run them but could be wrong. The pancake cage i...

Re: Hull ID info HELP from Casey the Insurance Guy

As I understood it when I bought my new hull, coast gaurd regulations state, unless the company builds the complete boat the manufacturer can only give an MSO,manufacturers statement of origin, and the tag office will only title it as home made.
That's how It was explained to me.

Back when they where the other company, power shift, they had some issues with blades breaking at the shank. They claimed it's was something called whirl mode. Said some motor mounts caused the problem not the prop. No other prop manufacturer had the issue that I ever herd. I beleive they strengthene...
