Re: 0-470-11B Burning Oil

I bought an io-470 a while back that sat for several years, did a piston soak withBerryman B12 and Seafoam for a week- you can only do a couple of cylinders at a time because the liquid will run out through any valve that is open. After soaking, I pulled the prop slowly through and forced the liquid...

Re: EFI on 4 cyl?

I recently converted a Continental o-470 to injection, it runs good. If you have the continental "fuel control unit" and a pump (mechanical or electric) that delivers the right volume and pressure, all you need is to route the fuel to the cylinders and through an injector. Continental calls the inje...

Re: 0470 fuel manifold leaking

Aircraft Spruce has the part you need, $47 or so a few months ago. Takes five minutes to put it in.
I believe they call it a "fuel manifold diaphragm"

Re: BAM! CRUNCH! OUCH! ...oh no.....

Turns out that the starter adapter spring and gear are OK but the crankshaft gear and camshaft gear will have to be replaced. I think these two gears can be reached without tearing down the engine although I'm strongly considering a tear down of the whole thing to inspect it all. Anybody ever replac...

Re: BAM! CRUNCH! OUCH! ...oh no.....

I suppose it could be argued either way, the mag is to blame for the kickback but excessive beer could be the reason for the TERRIBLE design of the Continental starter adapter by whoever designed it. Did some reading on various aviation forum about this engine and kickback related starter failures a...

BAM! CRUNCH! OUCH! ...oh no.....

My overhauled O-470, less than an hour run time......non-impulse mag p-lead had some corrosion on it from this Texas rainy weather that keeps on coming. Primed it, hit the starter with left mag "on" and right mag"off"---toggle switches----BAM! Blew one exhaust pipe off the manifold, scared the Absol...

Prop governor remove?

O-470, was going to leave the prop governor on and for various reasons that seemed valid at the time removed it, made a block-off plate, put a plug in the crank. Now I've started wondering if there are going to be oil pressure issues with it gone, not sure quite how the oil flow works inside there, ...

Re: New ideas on an old topic-aircraft oil

To be accurate, the airplane I mentioned with water injection uses it under high power settings as detonation protection in lieu of very rich mixtures of 100LL, highly modded engine in experimental airplanes are not unusual but are prohibited by the FAA for certificated airplanes. That same airplane...

Re: New ideas on an old topic-aircraft oil

One guy with a Vans RV aircraft believes that the reason aircraft engines run ashless dispersont oil has nothing to do with quality but everything to do with FAA certification red tape.

New ideas on an old topic-aircraft oil

Been reading a lot, here is what I think I know: Lycomings have camshaft spalling problems more than Continentals. Continentals, especially the 470s and 520s have cylinder wear probably more than Lycomings. Aircraft oil for break in is additive free and is called loosely "mineral oil". Aircraft oil ...

SLOW turning old Delco starter

Thanks to GMAC 76 my magneto issue seems to be solved, now trying to get my o-470 cranked up it turns over real slow, like a really low battery but the battery is new and fully charged, good connections throughout. Now the starter itself (Delco) looks like the one my old 1956 Studebaker had on it ma...

What does the Lucas do the continental type friction starter drive? I'd worry about it slipping the way "car" oil will make a motorcycle clutch slip.

O-470-L spark issues SOS

O-470-L with Shower of Sparks mag on the left, vibrator is buzzing but no spark at the #1 plug when checked, this engine has not run since I've had it and the mag itself was put together with parts out of a box so it is totally unknown. I looked at the Bendix overhaul manual and quickly concluded th...

Shower of sparks

0-470, does the shower of sparks wire that goes from vibrator to the mag need to be like spark plug wire or regular 12gauge insulated wire? Wiring this thing up soon, I think I know how it works more or less but went sure about the wire type since it is high voltage like plug/coil wires. Thanks in a...

Is this all there is? O-470

I 'm working on a basket case o-470' pulled the vernatherm and it is nothing but a rod extending into the hole with a grooved head on it, looks like a o-ring might go in the groove but there is nothing there, other than the rod. No spring or anything else, so am I missing parts or is this an optiona...

will hollow crank leak oil into prop?

o-470, hollow crank originally for constant speed propeller, will oil leak from the crank on the fixed pitch prop? Are there plugs to go in the crank and where could I find them?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Frustrated and disgusted.....

Did you ever work out the overheating problem? This post is a bit stale but thought I would mention that correct jetting in a MA4-5 for an O-360 should run OK on a 470; you just have to open the throttle butterflys more to get it to go but the jetting is a separate issue. BTW, I have a 0-470 and a M...

Grade 8 prop bolts?

I read the other thread concerning failed prop bolts. Having trouble finding AN bolts long enough, Aircraft Spruce and others don't carry them with a 5 1/2" unthreaded shank length, did find some "aircraft" bolts, not AN, for $100 plus (for 6). Are many of you running grade 8 bolts? How is that work...

Re: Running ac motors on fuels other than 100ll

A Teledyne-Continental bulletin recommends that even in a 0-470 with the autofuel STC that it should run the first 10 hours on leaded fuel and that afterward auto gas is fine; running new valves/ valve seats with auto gas first apparently caused valve seat probs.

missing a part from my basket case 0-470

Anybody got a spare idler gear collar/shaft for a 0-470? I'm putting my motor back together and just realized I somehow don't have this part! By the way, I LEARNED THAT CONNECTING ROD BOLTS FROM A FORD 351 W from ARP (190,000 PSI) with a little tweaking will fit the 0-470. At $65 for the set instead...
