Let me fan you with my 4 "SUPERWIDE" blades as you rest your weary engine.
I think I need an additional goal for this build. Turn 4 S blades pitched at 1 to 1900 prop RPMs.

Swamphunter45, can I borrow you prop for this test?

Also not a bad idea to pull the plugs and look at them. Might give you some info to solve the problem.

I probably am a mess for building a high RPM LOW TORQUE motor for an airboat. Remember it is all about TORQUE. :stirpot: I am just hoping I don't have to cruise around at 4500 to 5000 RPMs sucking tons of gas.

Re: LS LOW TORQUE Engine Build

Here is an update. I think I found a used LS2 block for $500. It is a stock 6.0 aluminum block. Now I need to determine what length stroke I am going to use keeping in mind that max HSP will be at 7000 RPMs.

LOW TORQUE LS Engine Build

Well I have decided to build a LOW TORQUE LS engine to put on my airboat. As with any engine build, you have to have goals. Here are my goals: 1. Make maximum HSP at 7000 RPMs. This engine will have no low end torque. I expect that a 540 A/C will make more maximum TORQUE than this LS engine....

Re: Fun With Numbers

The answer is the thrust curve doesn't closely follow either the torque or HSP curves. When the thrust curve is graphed based on prop RPM and thrust, it looks like an exponential curve. Neither the torque curve or the HSP curve look like that.

You have to seek RPM to make HSP and more HSP is how you turn more prop. :stirpot: :stirpot: :stirpot: :stirpot: :stirpot:

LOL. Airboaters are really slow to embrace new technology. You still have people running 70 year old A/C motors wondering why they are always getting stuck and having to shake rakes to get out.

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

new to airboats but not tuning engines. I have one serious question for you guys. Why are people disregarding the O2 sensor in favor of the plug read method? If I chose to read plugs vs WB o2, my turbo engines might not make it past the first boosted run. Not to mention making the whole tuning proc...

Re: reduction and prop help on 650 hp

I would run the motor 5600 RPMs at WOT with a 2.68 turning either a 4 blade JR or 3 blade JX. A properly built LS is very dependable with WOT at 5600. The 4 blade JR will give you a little more push because of more blade area. You might have enough HSP for a 4 blade JX. Call Sensenich to find out. Y...

A spark plug magnifier is an inexpensive tool to have at the track. They are lighted and have a typical 10x magnification that allows you to look closely for the slightest bit of coloring on the insulator and to easily inspect heat patterns. https://www.speednik.com/files/2018/05/spark-plugs-perfor...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

These are brand new plugs, I changed them after I let the engine warm up. Ran it up to max 2600rpm on the trailer for 10-15 seconds then shut it off. Too lean? You need to look inside of the plug using a magnify glass to determine if it is too lean. This is the only way to see the color at the base...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

Well my advice would be to read the plugs. Mr. Branch who in my humble opinion is the King of Direct Drive Auto engines would say if your concerned about your full throttle fuel ratio run the boat hard and pull up on some dry and run hard again. Then from wide open let it go to idle and immediately...

Re: Engine stand flex

You are definitely making too much HSP. 8) You need to run supports (square or round tubing) from the engine mounts diagonally down and forward a couple of feet to the stringers. You see this done all the time on race boats. This will reinforce the top of the engine stand and keep it from pushing fo...

Re: Air fuel ratio for direct drive

I would recommend experimenting with the AFR and see how the engine responds. Also make sure you read the plugs while doing this looking for signs of detonation. Going a little richer at 2800 is definitely safer and might help you turn a little more prop.

Yes, you want to blue locktite everything thing you can because of vibration from the prop. What are the cam specs for the cam you got?

Re: Engine help on a 16X8

For a 4 blade JR, I would recommend a 2.68 ratio. I would also recommend getting an EFI aluminum LS from a builder near you. You don't have any crazy expectations. A stroked LS3 with the Holley HP EFI and a little cam is hard to beat.

Russ,

What do you recommend given the boat is limited to a 73" or 74" prop?
