Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

Well yesterday was the maiden voyage with the new setup and I have to say that 408 impressed me! It's pretty snappy and will damn sure run dry! Think the injection system needed time to learn what the engine wanted. I pulled up to what they call the racetrack where there is about a 6 foot rise to ge...

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

So we proceeded to tear down a Blueprint 383 Chevy out of a gearbox boat today. No. 1 and 8 pistons have broken ring lands. The sides of the pistons show galling, looks like a lean condition. If you notice they are Sealed Power hypereutectic .040 over. It also sports standard cast rods. Cast crank. ...

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

This coming Saturday I'm gonna take it out on the Peace River and run it. Plan on taking my digital angle finder and Snap-on torque wrench, give it hell and see what comes of it! Thanks for the offer Cracker. May have to make a trip to Okeechobee soon, maybe we can meet up somewhere around there.

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

Thinkin I'll repitch it to 2700 on the trailer which should put me at 28/29 on the water. It's a solid flat tappet cam and lifters. Had an extra new set lifters laying around the machine shop that the boss man gave to me. It's got about 13/14 inches at idle (500 rpms). At 1000 its got 16 inches. O2 ...

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

Yes the Fitech is on. On a vehicle they say at least 200 miles before the system has a good tune on it. So maybe I'm a little premature on the expectations. Maybe has a total of an hour of run time but that's an hour broken up into little segments. I really need to get it on the water and let it lea...

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

Yeah Gator, the dyno guy I had pull it wouldn't/couldn't pull it below 3000 with his Dynomite rig. We are about 2 weeks from receiving the brand new Stuska dyno at the machine shop so when the engine comes back off it will go on. Cam change could be on order then. I wanna get it out on the water to ...

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

Thanks Swamp. That's really insightful. I've got a few decisions to make. This engine is going on the new hull so when I get ready I might change the cam or think about a drive. Now that it's ready to run I would like to check out those Q blades. As with all projects, they take more time than planne...

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

Sooooo I finally got everything in place and pulled it out of the shop. Dumped it off the trailer in the yard and went to tuning it. Unfortunately I can't say I'm blown away with the performance at this point! Here's what I was experiencing. With the blades pitched at 82 deg. on semi wet grass (just...

Summit racing. Looks like this is the fitting you need. Description is wrong I think. Should be 5/8-18 male straight thread and 1/4 female NPT.

Re: Broken bolt stuck in prop hub

Don't believe they make them in brass. If your gonna use an air hammer just be gentle. If you go at it too hard you might end up swelling the shank and make more work for yourself. Heat it a little and spray, it will draw the Blaster in. WD40 works too, Liquid Wrench, anything that is designed to bu...

Re: Broken bolt stuck in prop hub

I agree on the air hammer. Don't like mushrooming the shank any more than necessary so it doesn't swell in the bore, hence the brass.

Re: Broken bolt stuck in prop hub

PB Blaster and a little heat. Propane torch so not to cook the carbon. The heat will suck in the Blaster as it cools. Take a brass drift and a hammer and try to drive it through til it passes the split. When going back together use some kind of anti-seize.

Circle H Airboats in Elba, Alabama does some really nice builds and very customizable. I'm contemplating ordering one soon to replace my fiberglass setup. They are a small family company. Prices are really competitive.

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

My goal is to be able to pitch it so I don't have to spin it up high to run normal, just to break loose. Hopefully I can drop my cruise rpm down around 1800. With the 302 cruise was at 2400 deep water. The thrust bearing takes more abuse in a manual transmission in my opinion. That little 302 has ab...

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

Today is the day! Started around 11 this morning. Got the 302 off and weighed. 408 lbs. That's about 21 lbs. less than the new engine. This is sure to be a stump puller with what I'm sure is double the power! We are getting a new dyno at the machine shop where I work and want to run the old 302 to m...

Re: Ford 289 DD prop size

I've been running a 302 with a 72 Waterwalker Sig Series for years. Pitched it to turn 3000 wide open, probably close to the 2 mark. Did ok with it, stopping on anything not slick was a no no! The new 408 I built should be a monster in comparsion.

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

So I got my Chinese crane scale today capable of 1100 lbs. After I tested it for accuracy by weighing myself using a short lifting strap and making a swing off of my engine hoist (lol), I hooked up the engine. The weight as dynoed minus carb and headers it comes in at 439 lbs. Assuming the cradle we...

Re: Piston/bore clearance

What material are they? 2618 or 4032? 4032 run generally tighter clearances due to more silicon making heat expansion less. 2618 expand more when heated requiring more clearance. I work in a machine shop and usually follow the manufacturers clearance requirements, except when Hypereutetic call for ....

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

750 Holley. Probably would have done better with a 600. Since I have fuel injection we didn't bother with finding the appropriate size carb. If I do the math with the torque numbers at 2800 it would have made somewhere in the 260 hp neighborhood assuming the torque decrease below 3000 was close to t...

Re: 408 Ford stroker build underway! Direct drive

Thanks Gator and Swamp. The dyno results are unfortunately not accurate down low. I really believe it's going to pick up power on the boat with the injection system. The prop pitch should tell a better story. I might wanna try the Q sometime. I talk to Andrew at Waterwalker yesterday about the Sig b...
