Re: Already time for a 496 rebuild

That sucks! Is it a roller cam motor or flat tappet?

What brand oil you been running?

Re: Question, for you caddy guys!

More than likely if this is a new problem it is timing. On stock engines with wear, it is common for that gear to slip around a little bit and bring it out of time. However, I have had more than one GM starter become weak when it got hot. Very common in the early 1970's Vettes.

Re: Cam guard, Lucas ,Marvel mystery oil?

You will still have the microscopic metal particles collecting inside the crankcase and acids building up. I say keep doing the oil changes regardless.

Re: DD1 cam??

I suggest you call Buddy Branch and talk with him about that plan. On some of the 500 engines with a lot of time on them he has suggested putting in a new type of key and pin gears and timing chain. If you go into it that would be a for sure modification. He may suggest a Competition Cams component ...

Re: Cam guard, Lucas ,Marvel mystery oil?

Lucas is much like old school STP it is a viscosity booster along with an additive package. I put one quart in with every oil change. Cam or break in lubricants are additives that introduce Zinc and Phosphorus as modern auto oils lack these elements due to EPA pollution standards. LUCAS STORY: I kno...

Great info from Deano !

I would tell you not to have a thermostat in that engine and opt for the plug design.

Stainless Steel Rigging

My buddy and I are doing a stainless steel rig for a new boat and ran to Tampa for materials. We visited Stewarts Stainless and the staff there was "awesome" to work with and very patient. If you need stainless for a build in the West Central region of Florida I would recommend them. Jerry and Rena ...

Re: rpm question

Several factors determine the peak horsepower / torque curve but the greatest is the camshaft. If you know a little more about the engine build I'm sure some of the experts on here can pin it down for you. The generic 454 makes peak torque 410lbs @ 3200 where as a Gen IV makes 541lbs @4100rpm. Porte...

Chad is right you may have put your self at added risk for some water damage. It doesn't take much to make for problems. Especially if it finds it's way or remains in the cylinders during the compression stroke.

I was always taught to bring the center of gravity down. Thirty pounds or more up high on the boats rigging can effect stability in a critical situation.

Polymer on sale

GTO in Ocala has polymer on sale, I ran up yesterday and picked up a sheet 3/8 black 160 inches by 80 inches.
Saved $100 and staff there rolled then banded it and loaded into my pick up...good service.

1/4 and 3/8 are on sale

Quite a few unknowns with limited info you provide but if hull, rigging and prop are decent $5k is a good place to start.

Black eyed peas and a grilled ham slice were our day 1 table fare. Did the ham 4 minutes each side and it ate better than a steak.

Just guessing

1) Reaction between fuel and older containers material ?

2) Reaction between UV light and lead suspended in Av fuel?

Long Tube Stainless Cadillac Headers

Anyone have a lead on stainless "long tube" headers for a Caddy 500.

Found block hugger and medium length but we would like long tubes to save torque on a DD build.
