Re: Oil temp issue
OK, I did a test today. I ran the boat on the trailer at 1900rpms and monitored EGTs and oil temp with my temp gun. It took 21 minutes to go from 0 to 230 degrees on the oil temp. It never got more that 135 deg, on the inlet or outlet side of the oil cooler. There is definitely no flow to the oil co...

Two different hulls, two different gauges, same issue. I forgot to mention that in the original post.

Oil temp issue
I have a Cont. 520. It has the vernatherm valve in it and a Hayden 1260 oil cooler on it, the temp sender is in the block below where the oil lines come out. Its a sand cast motor. The problem I have is that the oil temp. It warms up slowly (according to the gauge). However after 150 deg. it goes st...

Re: Harley motors
The guys at Hartline did a "black Widow" boat around 2003 with 2 Harley motors on it, with custom belt drives. The boat was to heavy and did not perform well. I think it was around 11'- 12 ' feet long. Those motors are not happy @ a constant 4500 rpm.

Is that 14 or 15 ft? I hope my hull is next in line at PB. I ordered a 14x8. Also are you in Williston or Levy County? Id like to look at your set up before William starts mine.
Thanks

Re: LYC. 540 rods in a 520 Continental
Thank You!
I had to believe there was more to the story than just what I had read. Im already working on a multi port EFI conversion plus coil on plug ignition. Sounds like I don't need to undertake this project as well.

LYC. 540 rods in a 520 Continental
I was searching around on the site and found an old thread about putting O540 rods in a 520 Continental to raise the compression ratio. However the thread is 5-6 years old and I don't recognize any of the players. Is this a legitimate option to get a little higher CR, and is it as simple as pulling ...

Re: Rotator Aircraft Gear Box SALE!!
How much length does it add, do you end up with a 540/520 that's longer that GSO 480 w/ the factory gearbox? I had one of those, you couldn't haul it in a short bed pick up without the tailgate down! Also, I'll be the one to ask. will a 520 survive at 3300 rpm?

Re: HULL MOLD???
Hartline airboats here in Williston, FL built the very boat you are talking about over 15 years ago. They used their 18' mold, and even went to the trouble of building a very nice center console and inner liner molds. They did not modify the flat bottom on the first one and built a tunnel into the s...

Oil Filter for 520 Contential
What is the best way to put an oil filter on a sandcast 520. I have seen several adapters but it Im not sure of the best on. Ebay has an adapter with 3 bolt holes, looks like it would bolt to the front of the oil pump housing, but mine has a tach adapter in that spot. Another has a piece that looks ...

Gauges for aircraft engine
I am having a new boat built. I want a nice set of matching gauges, including a mechanical tach, fuel, oil pressure and temp and volts. I would like a CHT if possible. Where can if find a set? I will be monitoring a 520 Cont.

How would you install on a Cont. 520, that is not using an aircraft flywheel? I use the aircraft started mounted on the front of the case.

Re: M 4-5 carb filter
I was told by an engine builder that these filters would choke a 540 or 520, that they would not flow enough air. Any truth to that? I really need one to keep the dirt daubers out of my carb.

Engine turning while towing
Anyone ever seen an aircraft engine turning over while towing? I was running south on I-75 between Gainesville and Ocala this morning in the hammer lane around 80mph and came up on an airboat with a straight valve 540, with a 6 blade warp drive. The prop was turning about a quarter turn at a time. I...

Put a 2 blade 72'' NGQ on it. ( 12'' wide, wing tip) I have a 285ph 520 on a 13' rivermaster w/ poly. It is set on 2.5 and at 2850 on the trailer. Its super responsive and will go anywhere. Stays on a plane at 1700 rpm with 3 people and a cooler in deep water.

Re: 520 Contential oil temp.
Lines come in and out the top. Also I filled to cooler / lines with oil when I installed it. I did not have a problem until I reduced the oil pressure. I was told that less oil pressure would slow the oil going thru the cooler and dissipate more heat. Also, I didn't like seeing 75psi oil pressure on...

Re: 520 Contential oil temp.
The oil cooler is directly below the engine. 1st line comes out of the engine with a 90 deg fitting and straight down into the cooler. The other has a 90 deg. fitting out of the cooler, runs along the top of it, then straight up and back into the engine with a 90 deg. fitting. I would think that 45p...

520 Contential oil temp.
Some one help me with the theory of oil temp Vs. oil pressure. I turn the oil pressure down on my 520, it was over 60 psi hot while running, turned it down to 35-40. Now the oil temp jumped up, it will get near 240 if I don't stop and let it cool off. Motor only has 15 hours on it and runs fine.

Cont. 520 mechanical fuel pump
Anybody found a way to put a mechanical fuel pump on a 520? Im tired on changing electric pumps. I had another one fail today in Cedar Key. It would quit every 4-5 minutes and the motor would die. I made it in by beating on it with a pair of wire cutters until it starting pumping. The first one that...

Re: Mean little 4 cyl.
No ECO Tecs for me. I have an obnoxious 3 rotor, turbo charged Mazda I would rig up before I did that. The problem is it makes power at 13,000 rpms so I need a 5/1 gearbox. Maybe I'm to old, but the sound of the young idiots with 4 inch exhaust on 4 cylinder rice burners makes me sick to my stomach ...

Re: Mean little 4 cyl.
Is there such a thing as a 250hp 4 cyl. or is that high compression race motor race motor only? Im thinking about building a lightweight deck-over ride boat that would go like stink. Mean little 4 cyl.
If a man wanted to build a bad ass little 4 cylinder, what combination could you come up? Is it just a stock wide deck o360, or some Frankenstein Cont. with GITSO cylinders? Not a race motor, something that could be reliable.
