Re: Cadillac - Gear Drive Ratio

I thought the purpose of a caddi was to get the low end torque and not run a box. When you put a box on it, especially more than 1.5 to 1 you may as well put a stock 6.0 ls on it. It takes a lot of money to get that platform to live it the upper rpm range. If you just want a big block, a BBC or BBF ...

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

Ill try to post a few pics. I have an oil filter adapter that takes the place of the oil screen in the oil pump housing. This is off of an aircraft, and runs an Oberg style filter. ( very fine screen and large surface area). On the aircraft it was plumbed with -8 fittings. I changed them to -10 fitt...

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

I high jacked slidin gators thread talking about my motor! It runs great, has 70 pounds of oil pressure at start up, 40 psi when 180-190. The old motor would turn a 72" NGQ set on 2.5 about 2750. This motor will sling that same prop, set on 3 @ 2950 if you just stomp it. The problem is it still runs...

Re: Tuning a Lean Running O-540 & 6AA / M5-4 Carbs

I spent all day with mine yesterday. I installed the afr gauge, re-clamped all of the intake hoses and changed the fuel pump to get 6psi. I also move the stock settings on my Pacemaker. I retarded the base timing to 18 and total timing to 22.5 . Bottom line---it still runs hot. AFR is: 800 15.1 1200...

Re: Tuning a Lean Running O-540 & 6AA / M5-4 Carbs

I have never tried to adjust mine, don't really know where to start. I was going to fix the lean condition and then get Darren to adjust it. Hurry up and fix yours then you can tell me how to fix mine!

Re: Tuning a Lean Running O-540 & 6AA / M5-4 Carbs

I too have Pacemaker ignition, where did you get this chart? That 35 deg @ 2000 rpm seems like way to much. Maybe that's at max vacuum.

Re: Tuning a Lean Running O-540 & 6AA / M5-4 Carbs

You can send me your O2 set up, but I know mine is running lean! I have zero color on any of my plugs, and wont run it again until I have made drastic changes of some kind.

Re: Tuning a Lean Running O-540 & 6AA / M5-4 Carbs

Tell me about the "copper gasket" thing. What is that supposed to do? BTW, after looking at your O2 sensor pics, I am not sure if your readings are accurate. My research said the sensor needs to be 18 -24 inches from the cylinders. That information was not for an aircraft engine, but for the system ...

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

I too have used many cans of carb clean looking for intake leaks. I had to power coat the tubes to keep the paint on them! I have been talking with Justin Ficken, I am most likely going to fuel injection. If so I'll have a very nice MA4-5 for sale. GMAC just went thru it and it has less than 2 hours...

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

Greg, do you have a 6AA carb I could try? You know, I have a sweet MA 4-5 we could trade if it works. I have a brand new Holley 500 from another project I can try next if the 6AA doesnt work.

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

MA 4-5, according to GMAC it is one of the best versions you can get. I did try to adjust the carb using a vacuum gauge (like you would adjust a Holley) I couldn't really get the manifold vacuum to change, but I could here the motor tone change. Im hoping someone can tell me how many inches it shoul...

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

I did get in running. Fired right up, 70 psi oil pressure. I did (2) 15 minute runs. Zero valve train noise! The old motor sounded like there was 5 dollars worth of quarters flailing around in it. However, its running to lean. Spark plugs are still white, like brand new. Manifold vacuum is 15 inches...

3 blade prop on a 520 Continental

I have a fresh rebuilt 520, there is a string on this site documenting it. My worn out 520 ran great and I thought it had good power. I could swing a 2 blade 72'' NGQ set on 2 1/2 @2850rpm. In my mind, with a better that stock 520, 10- 1 pistons, H290 cam, fresh carb rebuild and Pacemaker ignition, ...

Brand new Optima 1000 cca battery, good cables, clamps and grounds. The aircraft starter doesn't have the nuts to turn it. Hopefully by noon tomorrow the new setup should be ready to spin it.

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

Latest update. The engine is now ready to run! I pressure primed the engine with a home made contraption so when I hit the started button it only took about 20 seconds before I hade 40 psi on the gauge. The problem is, after I put the plugs it in and tried I start it, it has so much compression the ...
