Re: 520 Continental rebuild

Maximum lash is .200, I think the range is .60 - .200 I have two intakes at nearly .250. I live in a world where .035 valve lash is huge, .250 is a quarter inch! I ordered adjustable push rods from Smith Bros this morning. I hope to set them all at .85 - .90 at least they will all be the same.

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

I spent this weekend bead blasting and painting parts for final assembly. However, I have 2 intakes that I can not get the valve lash right on. Both are .200+. I have swapped all of the pushrods that I have and can't get there. they have slight preload but to much lash. What do I do, let it ride? Or...

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

Project update: Bottom end is together. All rings are file fitted, all cylinders are loaded, four are installed. All parts are in hand. I spent as much to rebuild the motor as I purchased it for to begin with. $100 to mag and polish crank $1300 for bearings, gasket set, nose seal, ect $2700 for cyli...

Re: GPU oil catch can setup

I put a catch can on my 520 and all it did was make a mess. First I installed the can at the rear of the motor connected directly to the vent, with a K & N style breather on top. The low pressure in front of the prop sucked the oil out. (big mess). Next I installed a crank case evacuation system...

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

I had Moore Performance recondition the cylinders, the finish hone left the worst one .006 above minimums. According to Keith they are in air worthy condition other than the ADs. He did not look up the ADs to see what it was for. I also found a chart online that has Superior ring part #s and recomme...

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

I have file fit rings before on automotive engines, I measured down .75 from the deck. I was sure that I needed to check the gaps down in the choke rather than 1 - 1 1/2'' down in the bore on the aircraft cylinders. The factory spec is .033 - .044 for the top and .030 - .046 on the second. I didn't ...

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

Im ready to start file fitting piston rings. Is there a standard for how far down in the bore I need to push the rings to measure the gap? Also, I have 10-1 Ross pistons and P5 superior rings, should I use factory specs for the ring gaps? Should I build it on the tight side or loose.

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

I have been waiting on parts! I gat a call from Larry at D & S, my cam, rods and rocker arms are done. Abner called 30 minutes later, pistons and rings will be here by Friday, cylinders are also done. Its a good thing I did all of my yard work and took the wife to dinner last weekend, cause noth...

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

Is anyone using permatex or any other sealant to reseal a/c cases/ Mine had silk thread when I took it apart. I know several people who use permatex, and one that used a product called anaerobic sealant. Catapiller uses this on all of their high pressure pumps and machined surfaces.

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

I found 2 bent pushrods this weekend! One was bent so bad it was rubbing the tube. That might have been the problem all along. I also noticed that the intake tubes did not line up between #3 - #5 when I took it apart. I mocked it up the weekend and no mater which intake I use #5 is off a little, lik...

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

According to 1 builder, just the considerable weight difference between the cast stock pistons and forged Ross pistons, should give it a lot more snap. Then add a point and a half of compression and hopefully it will be magic. Bearings and gasket kit came in today, I'm gonna spend all weekend cleani...

I have a matched set of 8.6-1 Superior pistons I'll sell cheap if you want to do the 520 thing. I have 2 nice sets of valve covers for 470/520 angle valve cylinders also.

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

Aircraft Specialties found them. No one could get the complete set, but after they found the thrust bearings separate the rest was easy. Bearings and gaskets are all on the way. Also, I'm sending my rods and rockers to D & S Cams for a referb. as well as the cam and lifters for a 292H grind. 10 ...

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

It is a 661 cam. There were several rockers that had slight preload on them even after rolling around to the round side of the cam. Enough that I had to tab the rocker shaft out with a brass punch. NOT beat out, tap out.

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

The motor is carb'ed, GMAC just rebuilt it last month. I have downloaded and printed the entire shop manual and the operating manuals. The block has already been hot tanked and the crank is going to the machine shop tomorrow to be polished and mic'ed. Based on what the crank cleans up at I'll have a...
