Re: Is there a difference in headers for o540 straight valve i vs angle valve

I just double checked, your buddies are correct, I was wrong, they are not interchangeable. The 2 bolt pattern is rotated about 90 degrees between the two. Here is the bolt pattern on an angle valve. https://southernairboat.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/rtMedia/users/2619/2020/08/AV-Header.jpg?159715642...

I am the same as Lariat, I have tried the Q and Whisper tip on SV and AV 540's, I settled on NGQ for both for best ground push.

Re: Hull Size for 0540

Most width figures are given at the top of the transom, which basically defines the maximum prop diameter. Width at the bottom is what the boat rides on and is a function of hull form. Wider, with less taper gives a wider bottom that will run better in deep water, grass etc. A wider bottom will jump...

Re: 540 Headers...

I think this quote basically sums it up. All airboat headers are made to be affordable. They are not designed to make power. Thanks, Chuck I have one boat with shorty headers and 2.5" flex into Magnaflows, the other is the 3" shorty with built in resonator blasting onto the prop. The resonator setup...

Bamaso, I am on-board with Kwan on the ground to starter cable, you will notice the difference. That said, if she won't turn over now, the ground cable is not all that needs sorting. I have new everything in the start circuit, Norman Clay starter, Optima Blue top and #1 AWG ground to starter. I can ...

Re: Tsi0540

Seven is correct that the narrow deck, straight valve 540 is the lightest and most robust variation of the 540's, it is a very reliable engine. The less desired comment is based on pricing, Narrow Deck cylinders do get a bit of a premium these days. I run a narrow deck O=540 pushing a 14 foot rivete...

Re: Mechanical fuel pump going bad?

Have you replaced the Racor? Most electric pumps also have a screen on the suction side that should be checked/cleaned.

The mechanical has check valves that might be leaking due to corrosion or debris, the diaphragm is either good or bad, no real in between.

On to the actual riveting. Rivet hammer, 3X (4X would be better for this job, but 3X is more versatile). Round head attachments and buck bars. https://southernairboat.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/rtMedia/users/2619/2020/07/IMG_3522-600x800.jpg?1596326675 https://southernairboat.com/wp/wp-content/upload...

Re: Angle valve 0540 vs strait valve 0540

I'm looking at purchasing 0540 straight valve narrow deck do I need to be concerned about all those abbreviations after the 0540. Any good advice Wikipedia is your friend here for all the model codes. But keep this in mind, with airboat engines there is NO guarantee that the model code on the oil p...

I'm not that familiar with the Turbo's either, but I agree with Diggin on most of his post except for this. The point to all of this is that if the engine is rated at, say, 315 hp, it will still make that power without the turbocharger since you will be operating the engine at or near sea level. I t...

Re: Is this from detonation?

With the bushings worn out I think it could go well past the original timing. Also check the end play of the drive gear. The shims are probably worn out allowing the shaft/gear to push up, which changes the timing further (more advance I think??).

Yes, the anode would need to be on the outside, in contact with water. DO NOT use magnesium anodes in salt water as it can make aluminum brittle due to excessive current. Zinc is correct for salt water and would be my go to for all waters for simplicity. I don't run any anodes, they would need to be...

Re: Fuel lift pump

There are a lot of options for a 5-7 PSI prime pump. But on an injected engine it is best to use a prime pump that makes sufficient pressure to run on if the mechanical pump fails. I'm running Continental Injection on a Lycoming 540, but only a low pressure prime pump at the moment, upgrading the el...

There are basically 2 different rivet styles, and several materials. Primary rivet styles are Flat Head (AN426) and Round or Button Head (AN470). This picture shows a 3/16" diameter Flat Head and a 5/32" Button Head. https://southernairboat.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/rtMedia/users/2619/2020/07/IMG_35...
