1/4 x 20...make sure ya use a short bolt on the 2 holes that are in the bowl so ya don't punch a hole in the bowl bottom or put 1/4 x 20 studs in those holes

Re: Carb rebuild ????

I get about 50 degrees cooler on top plug vs point I show in pic, which reads 100 low. So 350 on the top plug would be roughly 500 on the CHT sensors. I understand what guys are doing with the IR guns etc...but wouldn't it be simpler to just buy a good quality FAA/PMA approved CHT gauge install it ...

Bro,do yourself a big favor and do not let that boat idle until it’s seated the rings. Or you’ll be taking her back Down did a fresh 540 last summer that a guy idled up n down the idle zone. He swore the builder ripped him off. Not so. Man build him a fine motor,he broke it in wrong. Run the piss o...

Re: Carb rebuild ????

I think most guys shoot the cht with the IR gun at the base of the top sparkplug....shoot all 4 to find out which cyl is the hottest......200 rpm drop is too much.....on your check off list add a possible carbon track on one of the dis. block towers...them 4cyl bendix mags are famous for carbon trac...

Re: Carb rebuild ????

if the carb was full of fuel when it was shut down and has set for that long most of the fuel circuits are most likely plugged with residue from the fuel and imo a full overhaul is most likely in order but taking it apart will tell ya what needs to be done ....it is the best way to be sure....if the...

I had an old 290 gpu way back in the day and the carb of choice then was a 1 barrel rochester off an old 6cyl chevy pickup 235 engine....think they called it a tea pot carb........ NAPA sold them rebuilt by a company called Cherokee Rebuilds..... there are used and rebuilt ones for sale on e-bay

I also agree on the plug color plus is it not hard to believe that the engine can run at those temps 450 and 550+ for that many hours without any issues or failures ....just don't seem mechanically possible it can run that hot and live

Re: Tuning a Lean Running O-540 & 6AA / M5-4 Carbs

Tell me about the "copper gasket" thing. What is that supposed to do? BTW, after looking at your O2 sensor pics, I am not sure if your readings are accurate. My research said the sensor needs to be 18 -24 inches from the cylinders. That information was not for an aircraft engine, but for ...

if in fact your are 100% sure the engine is running too lean and needs more fuel then the only way to provide more fuel on the 4-5 carb would be to enlarge the main nozzle/jet....but like John said it is a time consuming job till ya get the results ya want cause ya need to drill in such small increm...

Re: 520 Continental rebuild

I would suggest an MA 6, use the aneroid to adjust fuel mixture by backing it out a 1/4 turn till plugs tan up. Or have a manifold built to hold a Holley 500 with #78 jets. Also, main jet in the 4404 can be drilled out, it just takes many R&R of the bowl to get it fatter, I would ream the pilot...

The carb was an MA-4-5.......10-4404....OEM 0-540 260HP engine....there is no bigger stock jet than the 47-779 that is in that carburetor that I am aware of.....it is essential that the l/r lever be in the full rich position at all times...and an adjustment of the economizer may help...I seem to hav...
