Opening day success

Postby belly_up » Sat Oct 03, 2009 1:39 pm

Today the texas archery season opened. I've been seeing a few good bucks running together near our place but never on it.

This morning I headed out with the wind blowing the opposite of what I preffered but I figured I would take my chances. I have a blind I made from an old airboat cage but havent shot my bow out of it and didnt feel comfortable sitting in it yet. So instead of hunting the feeder I hunted a treestand overlooking a food plot.

Well to start off my thermacell was broke so I had plenty of company throughout the morning with the skeeters. Then the bottom step of my stand was broken so I had fun trying to get in. Finally, I got all settled in and waited for the light to come. I cant see much at all other than the small food plot so it can get pretty boring. I had a chicken hawk come and sit 10ft above me and make all kinds of racket while he stared at me trying to figure why I was up in the tree. haha That was pretty cool.

About 745 I thought I heard a faint grunt from a buck. I pulled of my facemask so I could hear better then sure enough he grunted right by me again. Then he walked right into my shooting lane and started eating. I drew back but was not sure if he was a legal buck(>13" inside spread) Finally I made up my mind to take him. I ended up making a high shot because I jerked but I knocked him to his feet and that was that.

He was a young deer and had some great potential but this is my first buck with a bow other than a spike so I didnt want to pass on the oppurtunity. We have a couple bigger bucks running around. I put my gun up 2yrs ago and havent touched it since....I LOVE bowhunting it is such a thrill!! Time for duck season!

Great buck. No need to let that one walk with the bow. Good choice.
