Matagorda Airboat Launch

Postby weldandglass » Mon Jan 18, 2010 4:03 pm

Does anyone hunt around matagorda? We're heading to Matagorda this weekend and it's been a long time since I'be been in those parts. I know they don't allow airboats in the harbor and I was wondering if there's a good place to launch there.

Why wouldn't they allow airboats in the harbor? No different than any other State built ramp? For East bay, the ditch across from Rawlings always saved us some time and Riverbend's not far from the diversion channel and West bay.

Thanks for the information. We did some work in Matagorda several years back and I thought I remembered that we had to launch somehwere other than the harbor because they didn't allow airboats. I might be mistaken.

I've never tried putting in a airboat in the harbor but now curious. I guess its up to the Harbor Master to make whatever rules for his harbor. He might not allow them since his personal house is close.

I checked with a friend who was also on that job. He said when they tried to launch the airboat the harbor master came out and said they couldn't start the engine while the boat was inside the harbor. He said they could launch there and tow the airboat out of the harbor and start the engine once they were in the GIWW, so that's what they did. That was about five years ago so it may have changed since.

Friggin dumbazzes... could instate a 1000 or 1500 RPM rule or no wake or no plane as it should be in a harbor.... The noise is nothing at those speeds.....

There are still signs there specifically for airboats that say they aren't allowed to launch there. Go over to Riverbend for West Bay, and have to use one of the ditches on the East bay side between Riverbend and Rawlings.

Weldandglass,

Just make sure when you run through the "locks" that you give the operator a good ole' #1 salute when passing by. They've become a real pain in the ass in the last few years.

Hmm.... I dont' remember what the locks look like much anymore.... no way to get up on dry ground and run around, just to piss em off more I suppose... not that I'd do anything like that....

Lock operator will make you wait as long as possible, I think some fisherman must have ticked him off one too many times in the past. Maybe he just can't fish and is jealous. Maybe the job suits him fine if you know what I mean...

Oops, didn't realize it was all boats, thought they hated airboats for some reason...
