You have to compare the fine print. The best deal going for quality is the DPMS Oracle with 1:9 twist @ $519 from Buds Guns. It has all the good basics and a chrome lined bore.

The cheap Smith has an untreated barrel so corrosion is an huge issue.
The Bushmasters did not have M4 receiver cuts when I checked last.

Obviously you want a forward assist and shell deflector so watch for the cheapie sport versions that are slick side guns.

Send me the two specific guns your looking at and Ill look them over. A 1:9 twist really likes the old school cheap 55 grain ammo the 1:7 twist tends to handle green tip or a heavier bullet better.

This is the DPMS

FYI: If your in Leesburg there are 3 FFL dealers within 10 miles who take Buds orders for a fee around $30 to process. You make that up in not having to pay sales tax.
Pats Pawn and Central Florida Gun are two of them.

I have one and it shoots good.

Has internal receiver cuts to feed better, chrome lined bore, forward assist, decent trigger.
You will need front and rear BUIS ( pop up sights) they are "optics ready" which means railed slick tops with no sights.

I have Colt & Bushmaster in .223 and Windham Armory in .308. Love all of them, each set up different.

If you purchase pop up sights be very cautious not to buy junk. There are a bunch of plastic "paintball sights" sold as AR15 parts and they are junk.
Go with a well known brand and from a reputable vendor.

Wait and get good ones if you have to.

I thought the Melonite treatment from S&W was working out for them. I considered buying one a couple of years ago. I will research the issues you speak of. I ended up choosing a CORE 15 I liked the idea of supporting one of our own.

You get what you pay for and everyone has a "cheapie" gun today including Colt.

If you like CORE thats cool, I like Adams Arms and they are a local Florida company as well.

I like S&W for the resale value. Had a Bushmaster in .223 but it seemed to be a little heavier than it needed to be. Shot good though. JMO

IMO it's gonna be pretty hard to beat the .223 and .308 style AR's they're building right here in Ocala, FL, the Core 15's. I've watched them being machined and assembled and they're a top shelf weapon. I had a Bushmaster in .223 that seemed heavier than it needed to be .... shot good though.

Let me make this easy for you to swallow Adams Arms sells CORE components for their rifles.
Adams has the patent and in fact Smith & Wesson has also purchased from Adams Arms.

The gun I recommended to Monkey would have cost him $1,289.00 at CORE as per their web page, but the deal I led Monkey to was a few bucks over $600.00. Nothing bad to say about the CORE folks, been up their myself. When your looking to get the best deal you gotta shop.
