Thank you guys I really appriciate it. I think if we get the word out with the Internet and all we can find the owner. I know I would want someone to do it for me. I'm guessing it probably fell off a buggy on the way into the road because the parking lot was full and we got front row parking when we pulled up about noon. LOL So who ever dropped it in sure we just missed them, and probably took there parking spot after they left. I'm having an police officer friend run the serial numbers so I can at least find the original owner. I left my number at the road on the bulletin board too. I even told a park ranger on the way out Sunday morning but no one had reported it lost as to his knowledge.

You have the best of intentions. You may consider turning the gun into law enforcement just incase the owner reports the firearm as stolen. You could explain the situation much easier now than later.

Craig's List has a lost and found section. Make sure they can describe what they lost.

I 'll probably get some criticism for this but in my opinion the gun is safer with you than it would be if you turned it into law enforcement. No one there would make the effort like you have to try and find the owner and it would probably just "fade away".

As for having to explain where you got it, there's plenty of evidence here that shows you are seriously trying to find the rightful owner. JMO.

Skinnypockets,

To be honest with you I sort of agree. I think you guys know my intentions are pure, but I asked a couple of my cop friends and they all said the same thing. If they have to run numbers, they have to confiscate the gun. And they all told me it will be collected somewhere and it will sit in storage for ever and nothing will ever come of it. And even if the rightful owner came forth, they would have a hard time getting the gun back because of the paper work. It's no ones fault, just the nature of the beast. It's not up to them, to my understanding it's strickly protocol. And protocol is in place for a reason, wheather or not we understand. I'm just going to keep checking on line and making sure it's not reported stollen. And until it is, I guess I'll just hold on to it and keep it clean until the right person comes forth. It's a beautiful gun and I'm sure someone misses it very much.

Jake - you are a stand up guy for what you are doing BUT in my opinion it was lost by a careless gun owner. I realize that $h1t happens but too many guns get into the wrong hands by careless owners not keeping them under lock and key. This could have just as easily been found by someone with bad intentions or someone having a bad day. Gotta feel for the fella that lost it but he should have kept better care / control of it. Thank you mudweiser,

I have a friend that's going to post my number on the check in house too for me this weekend. Probably should have done that but I figured the rain would take it out.

Good morning,
Just wanted to add my two cents into this conversation. As it has already been said, I wish there were more people like you. This is why I love the airboat community. I am in Law Enforcement in the central Florida area. When our agency receives guns they sit in our evidence section for one year. If they are not claimed within that year (with a court order), they are sent to a steel mill outside of Jacksonville and melted down.

I would think you should be able to bring the firearm into the police department of one of your Police Officer friends and have them inspect the firearm and run the serial number. If it's not stolen they will probably write and incident report that you brought in a firearm to have the serial number checked, Officer XXX personally inspected the firearm and ran the serial number and it was not reported in the system, end of report. If it's stolen however they will take it, ask you how you acquired it and open an investigation in an attempt to solve the case. If it is stolen I'm sure you would want to have the gun out of your hands and with this post as proof it would be easy to back up your story that you found the gun. That's just what I would do. Definitely don't just turn the gun in as found property though.

If law enforcement accepts the firearm as "Found Property" they will only keep it for a set period of time (Depending on the agency), and then have it destroyed if no one claims it. The agency will normally post it in the paper for a specific time (Three issues), and if no one comes forward within 90 days (Or so) they will dispose of it. Just saying. 8)

I hope the owner gets the gun back, but this poster is a stand up gentlemen for trying to do the right thing. Its a sad thing to maybe lay a gun on a tailgate or cabtop and have it fall off, but it makes me feel good to know the firearm was found by an honest person who is trying to find the owner. May the sun shine on you, sir, when you need it to.
