What's the best all around prop for a 12' alum hull w/a 200?

Post by billford216 » Tue Oct 07, 2014 9:23 pm

I have a 12' ultralight aluminum hull with a 200 and I'm looking for a prop that will give all around good "performance". I have tried a Q Series, an NGQ, and an NGH so far. The NGH was like spinning my tires at a red light, with what felt like a decent top end. The NGQ has great holeshot and a nice cruise speed, but was not impressive on top end. The Q series seemed to perform just like the NGH. The hull is 90 sides and 125 botom with poly, 25 gallon fuel tank, conduit rigging, single rear driver double front passenger with aluminum boxes under both seats. Any input would be appreciated, especially from anyone with a similar setup. I'm not trying to start a "brand war", just looking for my next prospect prop. I love the look of a 5 blade Saber or Excalibur, but don't know anyone running either.

68 or 70 Water Walker Cypress. I love mine!lite as a feather and tough as nails. Pushes on the hill great. Snappy!!! Call Them and they will meet you at the lake and let you try a couple. Or Terry, PTR34 on here handles Sensenich and he will do the same till you get what you like.

If you haven't tried or ran a cypress series you don't know what you're missing an Im no spokes person for water walker I just love mine but if you want top end speed an stay off the hill go with one of the multiple skinny blade props

The NGH was 68". The Q Series was 69". The NGQ was 68". I'm thinking I want the speed of a multi blade prop as long as it will still run the hill.

I switched to a Cypress on my 0320 and I love it. It made a huge difference. I have it in a short hub, which I think makes it a 66"?

Whirlwind Whisper Tips are good props. I'm running a 70" narrow on my 4cyl now. Was running a 72" narrow on my 6cyl Franklin and i've been satisfied with the performance of both.

You should try the Excalibur, it's between the narrow blades and the wide. I am running a 3 blade 68 on my 11 ft alum boat with a 200, it works great.

So I'm going to try a 68" 5 blade Saber this weekend. It was either that or a 72" Whisper Tip, but i think the Whisper might be too big. A tower trip is being planned for Saturday so that should give me plenty time to test it out. I will post results.

I can give my suggestion for both BigBlue and Billford. We have many years of experience with the Lycoming 360 engines in both flying aircraft looking for STOL performance, as wells for airboats looking for thrust performance. These are great engines, typically with 180 to 200 hp.

We recently designed the 3-blade Excalibur 68" propeller ($1790) exactly for the 4-cyl a/c engine on airboats. The Excalibur is about 1" wider than the popular skinny Razor X, and is still extremely lightweight and stiff for fast snap, but without compromising on low-end and mid-range performance. The Excalibur was designed to give you the best of both worlds from the light-weight skinny Razor X blade styles, to the wide Whisper Tip blade styles.

Another option is our very successful 2-blade Whisper Tip Narrow 70" diameter propeller ($1590). This is one of the best all-around options for a 180 to 200 hp 4-cyl.

Let me know if you have any other questions. You will want to focus on the narrow-wide blade styles, or the skinny blade styles. I wish you the best in your propeller quest.

Sincerely,
Patti

Thanks for all the input. If the 5 blade doesn't do it for me, it sounds like I need to try a 70" whisper tip. I should know after tomorrows ride.

Let us know how it does. You'll definitley be satisfied with the Whisper Tip!

depends on the riding you want to do. are you trying to run the hill all night or cruise around in the everglades? I had a 70" Q on my ultralight hamant 200 and it was my favorite prop I ever had on it.

So after trying a 68" NGH, a 68" Q series, a 68" NGQ, and a 70" 5 blade Saber, I'm 99% sure Im going with the Saber. It has just as much holeshot as the NGH or the regular Q series, with a MUCH better cruise rpm and a lot more snap. The NGQ was very impressive for holeshot, but lacked performance otherwise. For example, with the NGQ I would run 25mph at 2000rpm. With the Saber I run 30mph at 1850rpm. The Saber has good holeshot, great snap, and was the fastest on top end by far. The boat starts up faster and runs MUCH smoother with the Saber also. If anyone would recommend any other warp drive type props to try Im all ears. Im glad I finally tried one.

I want to try one on my 180. But what should I go with a four blade or a five blade and what size should it be? I have a stock 180 on a 12 foot Hament ultralight front seat driver right now I'm running 69 inch Q series

I had a 5 blade razor x on my 170 then went to a 68 cypress series and theres no comparison. Low end push is incredible and very snappy

Yea I'm running the 68 cypress now u preferred the 5 blade over the water walker? Just don't want to lose too much low end push
