NGQ prop tips wearing out?

Post by jeepinocala1111 »

I want to hear from owners of this prop who's prop tips are worn off or almost worn off. How does the prop perform without the tips? How long did it take to wear them down?

Several people to include mself who run the NGQ have told you they are tough and "do not wear off!"

Actually a Sensenich rep told me they do end up wearing off when this happens they grind off what's left. I am just trying to get an idea of how long it takes for them to wear off?

Well I am curious who told you that because I have never seen one wore off. I have seen them removed because the prop struck a solid object and cracked them. To wear off seems far fetched because the tips are solid carbon fiber with a metal leading edge.

I have to correct it was not a rep. But I read an article on here then pm the guy to confirm and he did say yes they wear out and they will grind off the last bit for you but not replace when it happens.

I have approx. 120 hrs on mine with no wear the tips. The flat area towards the end of the blades are starting to show some wear but that is normal. I believe the tips are included in the length of the prop. That could shorten the prop by 2" , I think that would make a difference in performance.

I think you would be well served reaching out to the manufacturer on that one. I don't buy it. Like what was said above, the winglets are solid carbon fiber & resin with nickel leading edges. I can't imagine what it would take to 'wear' them down.

Are you saying the tips have a metal leading edge?

I believe I will end up going with one of these props cause I keep hearing they push real hard and of course they are quiet. I just want to know everything before making the decision.

They don't wear, you got some bad info, the tips are solid and have an integrated metallic leading edge as "Digginfool" advised.

Here is a picture of a NGQ with a leading edge. I have ran the NGR blades with no issues. Try calling the manufacturer and ask them, I know people have cut off the winglets for clearance.

They are a awesome prop from a great company for sure i tried them and all most got a set but warrenty and that issue pushed me else where ... And if i could find a sent for the right price id still get some ....But lets get real i have seen many sets where the the edge bends upward wear out from normal wear and tear ..there is no metal in that corner thats the problem its just raw carbon witch at that tip speed and forced air does not hold up well to dirt and water contact..the company has no way to fix them so they will cut them off witch does not drop the performance much you can tell at all

That's what I wanted to hear only of the ngq blades. How does it perform at lower rpms? I plan to have mine maxed out at 2750 in the water.

The tip is the same concept as a Whitcomb winglet it performs great at higher tip speeds. It is the quietest prop on the market by far, The regular R performs better up to the 1,700RPM range (blade RPM) but the NGR performs better at higher blade speeds. If you look at the design it all makes sense the blade will not be as efficient as a R at lower speeds because you are dragging the bent tip but as blade speed (air speed) goes up the tip will cause the blade to become more efficient! If you want a quite prop the NGR is the best if you want more efficient blade at higher tip speeds the NGR is the best! In the next month or so we will be doing some thrust testing for a manufacture and the NGR and R blade will be tested against a new proto type blade. After the test if its OK with all involved I will post the data!

The majority of wear on a propeller occurs as a result of water exposure mixed with sand or other abrasives that come into contact with the blades. Keep them dry and away from abrasives and the propellers should experience little to no wear. Water moving slowly has carved numerous rivers and rounded a many a river rock. At extremely high speed it is used to cut numerous materials in a waterjet application.

I would agree with that and only add deckovers tend to wear out tips much faster than a open hull just because of the above stated fact. More sand and water go thru the prop on a deck over than a open hull. Every deck over I ever owned showed prop tip wear pretty quick.

For my application it would have to be either a ngq or I believe a ngh. I do not think the ngr would work cause I need to keep it max length of 74 inch.
