How much power to use superwide blades?

Post by B_lot2004 »

How much HP does it take to really utilize the super wide blades well?

I.E. A 3 blade Whirlwind super wide would need how much car motor to turn it with a 2.55 gear box?

About 300 hp minimum without needing to under pitch.

This should help you out. I have a 800hp 540 BB with a 84" 4 blade Whirlwind Super wide and a 2.55 gearbox. I can tell you that if I was less then 700hp the prop would be to much prop to set the prop in the right pitch zone.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have a roughly 400 HP 5.3 LS and a new 2.55 ordered. I found a reasonable 78” 3 blade Whisper Tip SW but I don't know if I have enough to swing it like it needs to.

I previously had a 2 blade Falcon with a 2:1 belt on a SBC, so this new set up is a vastly different critter.

SwampThang has 3 clean WhirlWind 2.0 blades for sale that would probably work very well for you.

They were on a amped 383 with a 2.68 Ox and worked great. He just upgraded to a full carbon fiber JR blade this weekend.

Thanks SwampHunter. Can you DM me a way to contact him? We put a 2.0 on a boat we built for my uncle and he really likes it. But he runs a 2 to 1 reduction and a 355 sbc. I was thinking I wouldn't be turning the prop fast enough to utilize a 2.0. But my plan was to try out my uncles and see.

We sent up a buddies boat with a 81" 3 blade maximus he runs a stock carbed l33 5.3 with a 2.55 gearbox, runs fairly well. With another 100 hp it would run great. It is on a heavy 14' alumitec deckover round sided boat.

On thing I will say it runs the water loaded for fishing at 3,800-4,000 and will run most dry ground at the same rpm

i am running 3 82" JX blades, 2.55 ox and my built LS3 stroker is just about right. any less HP and i would be lacking big time.

also if you did not change the pistons out on your LS do it now. Hyper pistons will not be happy in a boat :)

I run a PCM 6.0L, published Hp is 375, ch3 2:1 spinning a 80” 3 blade sensenich K series. Blades 12” wide and ain’t got much pitch them runs well but struggles sometimes. Not seeing how you would twist it with your set up with any pitch at all especially within the blades preferred rpm range.

on that note... what is the optimal pitch for the Sensenich S blades? I have my 3 blade 80" at 2.5 spinning 4500-4600 at WOT on the water. 496 through a 2.38 OX. I can cruise in skinny water at 2300 to 2500 rpm which is nice and I can move pretty easy on the ground but if I am loading the motor too much I'll take a little pitch out and let it turn 5K or so. I have no idea what kind of power my engine makes so I can't say how it would work... but last year I had the stock 454 vortec out of the truck with a ton of miles on it set to around 1.25 ish and could turn it 4200 on the water and it did ok. Nothing spectacular but would run the ground and had decent speed for what it was. Builder guessed the stock 454 as it was probably had less than 300 hp.

Nebraska- Sensenich states 2300 max rpm for the S optimum rpm is 1800-2100 for best over all performance. 2300 with your 2.5 box puts engine rpm at 5750.

If your looking for push they are in the sweet spot at slightly over 2 and do great to about 2 3/4 mark. That is judged off the inboard hub seam.

The old saying was they are a “power sponge” after 3

I run 4 pitched at 2 1/2 they have great push

I had a 350 SBC ZZ4 (355 hp) w/2.68 Stinger on my last boat that ran a 2 blade 78" super wide setup that pushed extremely hard on the ground. It was set at the 2 mark. The main issue was cruising with them. It seemed like you really had to stay in the pedal to cruise and the faster you spun it the more it fell on its face for speed. But for low end grunt it was a beast. Now, that was on an older 05' Diamondback hull. The newer hulls are much more free, so keep that in mind.

I didn't vacate, I just haven't checked back in this thread since about the 17th. It was dead for a while. I'd really like to try out a Maximus. I will probably end up with a Whispertip EX unless I find a good used one.

The motor ended up with about 425 HP, and yes sir I upgraded the pistons when it was bored. I have a 2.55 stinger and would like to keep WOT under 5800. Due to clearance issues 80" is gonna be the largest I try to put in there. I also am gonna stick with a 3 blade.
