Airboating May - June 1974 (old magazine)

Postby rick » Tue May 13, 2014 7:35 pm

As requested by several SA members, we've added a new area for old airboat stories, pics, history, etc.. Ain't much there yet, but it's called "Airboating Historical Archives" in the forum list.

I figured it'd be a good place for this old airboat magazine that was provided by Paul Dixon (Airboats Unlimited) The whole magazine can be read here: http://southernairboat.com/pdf/5-74-magazine.pdf...or by clicking the image

Sorry to hear that Chad. I just looked up the thread you posted back in January...I must've missed it.

Nomad, sounds good...except I need to learn more about copyright stuff first.

Gladesman gets credit for the idea.

Seeing this magazine reminds me of the airboat races that were held for a few years along the Melbourne Causeway in the early to mid '70s. Having just arrived from Michigan, these were amazing machines to us. One boat in particular still sticks in my mind. If I remember right, it was yellow with a 720 in it. Wasn't the fastest out there but it sure sounded great. How many of you remember those races?

I grew up in Satellite Beach, but missed the airboat races on the causeway.
I do remember some small hydroplanes racing alongside the road.
I also remember both causeways were lined with Australian pine trees.
I think It looked better with the trees, and you could park under them.
This vintage magazine section is a great idea!

I grew up on the Indian River in Indialantic. I remember the little hydros as well; three point with a small outboard on the back but man did they fly! The airboat thing only happened for a few years; I would have to guess around '73 to '75. They would run to the south on the Indialantic side, parallel to the causeway. I remember there were concrete picnic tables in the middle of the pines. It was a great place to park and wax your car (once I was old enough to have one). The other thing I remember is how good the sheepshead fishing was. My nephews tell me you can't find a sheepshead around there any more.

Remember 'Spider Island' west of Sea Park?
There was a concrete bridge that went across the 'Grand Canal' over to a fenced area with
electrical transformers inside. We used to ride our mini bikes on that island, all the way to Pineda Causway, which was under construction. We caught fiddler crabs for bait and fished all day, havin
A ball on that island. We just had to be home in time for dinner.

We would waterski in the canal, eat lunch at Mather's or Eau Gallie Yacht Club, climb on the dragon, head to the Pines to surf and same rules; be home by dark. Those were some good days.

Ahh the dragon... I remember it like it was yesterday, I talked this tall skinny brunette named Susie
into going inside the dragon with me... Yeah buddy.
We used to ski the south end of the grand canal, and hang out under the pine trees.

Leroy Rotgers is in my shop most everyday at Valkaria. Heard the story a hundred times....

Hey, if anyone has a picture of Leroy Rotgers in his airboat,
I would really like to see it posted on here, so I can show him.
He is a good old boy, and would love to see some old photos.
Thanks, Mike.
