SFWMD voted unanimously this afternoon to trade the Shady Oaks / Lake Kissimmee property for wetlands acreage in Glades County. The SO property will be traded in its entirety to POMCOR Inc., no conservation or public access easements as deed restrictions.

125 acres just east of the paved road at the old marina site at Shady Oaks was set aside as a park to be managed by Polk County. Another ramp was promised at Otter Slough, some distance to the west, with management to be by Florida Department of Forrestry.

Does anybody know what wetlands acreage in Glades county they are talking about? I work in Glades county every week day and would like to know the specifics in this trade. The state already owns everything around Fisheating Creek all the way to Hwy78 in Lakeport (Fisheating Creek Marsh & Nicodemus Slough)...there's not much left to acquire except cane fields and cow pastures...but then again that would be a perfect lease back opportunity.

FYI
Sent this message to the below on Wednesday. While we didn't win, all the sqaulking did gather SPOKEN concessions on future boat ramps.
We should write a brief press release on the result with the SFWMD promises for our elected officials (below) who were copied. This way, the rest of the world is aware of promises made and will assist in prevention of amnesia by the SFWMD in the future.
Folks; please remember our elected officials work for US! Additionally, all the bureaucrats (WMD) are responsible to our legislators.
With legislation pending for us, I hope each of you take a little time to contact your elected official before March.

The Florida Airboat Association is an umbrella statewide sportsmen organization of airboat related businesses, organizations and clubs. We actively promote safe boating while protecting our natural resources. The FAA members have a long tradition as leaders in conservation, humanitarian aid and protection of Florida's native habitats by both word and action of it's members.
The members of the Florida Airboat Association received United States Congressional recognition in 2005 for their resolve in volunteer rescue efforts of hurricane Katrina victims.

Background:
FAA Press Release in November

RECENT LAND SHENANIGANS BY STATE
THREATEN FLORIDIANS' RECREATIONAL
ACCESS TO PRIME WATERWAYS, RAISE
QUESTIONS ABOUT MISUSE OF TAX DOLLARS

Less than a year ago, the South West Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) used the threat of eminent domain to obtain from a private owner 3,000 acres of prime recreational Lake Kissimee west shore real estate, supposedly to restore water levels to historic benchmarks.

Now barely eight months later, SFWMD finds less than a third of that pristine acreage was required for the fulfillment of the agency's goals. SFWMD is proposing the unneeded part of the land be declared surplus for sale to interest parties, including developers.

What just a short while ago held great promise for Florida citizens as a major waterway access area to over a dozen pristine lakes and connector streamsnow seems destined to be sold to the highest bidder. If this happens to be development interests, based on historic trends the public soon will be denied access. Another of the rare pieces of Florida that can be enjoyed by the public will be gone, locked up in gated communities.

-more-

In a reverse of the action being taken by the Water Management District,, the Governor and Cabinet ( Board of Trustees) recently approved the purchase of development rights on property near the Shady Oaks Property. To taxpayers it seems odd that one arm of government is selling developable land in the same place that another arm of government is purchasing new development rights! One could legitimately ask why one agency of the state is spending tax dollars to purchase property, while another arm is selling almost identical property as "surplus".

The original purchase price, obtained by the threat of condemnation, was approximately $16 million. By some accounts, it appears the Water Management District intended all along to retain the 800 acres and sell off the remainder of the property as "surplus" land. In this manner, the Water Management District could pay for the 800 acres it needed and realize a profit from selling the remainder of the land.

Sportsmen and boaters point to the fact that the original purchase was made using Florida Forever tax funds earmarked for restoration and preservation of natural areas to keep them open and available for public access.

Florida boaters in general and the Florida Airboat Association especially are concerned that another point of public access is now in jeopardy of being withdrawn from public use.

Capt. Phil,

We were informed at West Palm on Wed. that Florida Forever funds were not used to secure the Shady Oaks property - after staff had previously told BranCo they were.

They say this land was purchased with Ad-Valorum tax dollars out of the District's normal revenue stream - BECAUSE - they planned to SURPLUS Shady Oaks from the get-go.

Hell of a Deal, though - buy high and dry on Florida's second largest lake for $18.2 million and trade 18 months later for $54 million worth of swamp.

Look up Pomcor Inc http://www.pomcor.net/index.htm
These turnovers are what they do. Take from weak
struggling companies and turn them into real estate.
They are definitely in with the state, allowing SWFMD
to broker high yield real property for their gain.
This should be illegal. But was approved by Jeb Bush
and Charlie Christ.
Big Daddy is right. The whole scheme was planned.
NO DOUBTS

Dave,
The press release (above) was from December. It was released with the best information of the time.
As for the deal, We, as in us the taxpayer, must start making personal appearances to our elected officails. As a group, we don't. The anti's, the left, the big money & the lobbyists do and that is why things are done the way they are.
We have a free choise in this free county. Either we work ourself into the game via personal contact with our state House & Senate members or we continue to complain while looking throught the glass from the outside. Believe it or not, the power of this country is still in the hands of the people, providing WE choose to wield it.
With legislation pending this year, I pray we start making visits.............
If you need direction or help to do this, contact me. 813-968-6154

Phil,

Good information. Don't the WMD have to publish these sources of funding used to purchase these lands prior to the budget or planning stages? Where would this information be found? (Seems like this would be our first indication to get ready for a fight).

I'll be contacting Mr. Christ and Mr. Bush to complain of the waste of tax payers dollars to the "big business" of our state department.

Basket,

All the WMD info should be available through the Sunshine law. However, does not mean they will cooperate. That's why Branco & KRVSA retained legal counsel. Unfortunately many of the "Royalty" of the WMD boards don't deem us serfs worthy of their attention.

It's just the way the world works. If you want to begin a long term change, get involved & visit with your House/Senate members. FWF, Defenders of Wildlife, Save the Manatees, PETA, Sierra Club, ect all have relationships with our elected officials................If we don't get a few friends across the state, we will continue to be treated as second class surfs.
