HEADER LEAKS

Post by lfriz » Wed Feb 08, 2006 11:18 am

I HAVE A 4CYL LYCOMING AND JUST REPLACED THE THE GASKETS WITH THE NO BLOW GASKETS AND THEY STILL LEAK. CAN I DOUBBLE GASKET THEM, OR DOES ANYONE HAVE A NOTHER SUGESTION? THE HEADERS ARE TIGHT THEY ARE LEAKING FROM WHERE THE BOLTS ARE NOT, IF THAT MAKES ANY SENSE.

Can you put a straight edge on the header flange, or mating surface?
That will let you determine if the flanges are flat or not.

They may be bent down slightly where the bolts are, and not letting them seal where the bolts are not.

If they are bent or not flat, you may have to find a way to straighten them, without damaging them.

I GUESS MY HEADERS ARE BENT A LITTLE, WITCH IS NOT LETTING THEM SEAL RIGHT. I DID NOT WANT TO RISK MESSING THEM UP BY TRYING TO HEAT THEM UP UND TRY AND STRAIGHTEN THEM UP, BUT I GUESS I MIGHT HAVE TO.

I have the same problem with my o-320-e2d. I tried the
no blo gaskets and they still leaked. My header flanges
would sit nice and flat on a smooth surface.
I changed to the Airborne copper gasket where you use two
per cylinder and it seems to have solved my problem.
Here is an article that I found.http://www.sacskyranch.com/faqexhaustgaskeet.htm

Hope this helps.
