Man, what some great replies from my fellow airboat buddies which share my line of work. You know that most of the general public has no idea what stress we carry each day in our jobs. From the electrical service tech to the heavy equip tech we work on high dollar stuff that requires us to be on our game. I too work on heavy equip at our shop from Condor garbage trucks to BMW high end luxury units and you know both of those require years of training and dumpsters full of tools to repair. I had a guy walk in today and complain at our shop rate for commercial trucks and felt that the 75 an hour I charge for light duty should apply to his big rig. I explained to him that to diagnose the Cat under his hood requires me to have 25k worth of software and scan tool availability and then informed him to take it to Houston and pay 135 an hour compared to my 105 an hour and also wait for two weeks to get an answer on it. He puked. Remember guys good techs are hard to come by in whatever field you are in. So with that said you should always be paid what you are worth. Lord knows in my area I cannot find good high end techs. I am not against paying them, but you gotta know your stuff before you talk your game.

Heck Yobee I was justa thinkin since your not in touch with your buddies maybe you would like to relocate and get on your tools. Would you mind doing a little warm up job first and that would be replacing the flow valve on a septic truck that is half full in the heat of the day? Don't worry by nine tomorrow morning I will have my hand up that tank changing that valve out and flushing the tank. Joys of business ownership....LOL

Started on Heavy Equipment then went to a Ford dealership then a Honda motorcycle / Polaris snowmobile shop .
For the last 22 years as an Industrial Mechanic in the water treatment industry. Only the people that work in water treatment know what it takes to make raw water into tap water. You'd be surprised. :)

"Jack of all trades...Master of none" got out of Diesel Mechanic`s school in 1978....can`t seem to get away from it....not turning wrenches that often nowadays (hence the HASBEEN)...mainly make a living on the phone in our
Truck Parts / Machine shop business....turning taps was more enjoyable.

540 mountain motor I know what you mean about the customers / labor rates...I always remember 2 signs I saw when I was a teenager. Sarge Johnson had an auto shop in one of those old Gomer Pyle style quanset huts...
over the door one sign read "our labor rate is $20.00 per hour....$25.00 per hour if you watch....$30.00 per hour if you help"

the other read "our credit manager is Hellen Wait....if you want credit here you have to go to Hellen Wait !"

I had to wait a while to answer on this one ... cause I needed to tools to be a mackanic .. I was surveying a 4.5 million dollar house ont he beach last week and found a set of vise grips .. after letting them soak in some earl and rubbib dem wid the wire brush .. I hit the jackpot .. it said .. master mechanic on them .. and last week I couldn't eben speil it .. now I are one .. so if surveying gets any slower I now has a second career to fall back on .. like a kactis
Don't waste your time ... it is the only thing you can't get more of
.. if it accidentally looks like I gave advice please ignore it .. and notify me immediately
