I need to get some.......advice

Post by airboat4fun » Mon Aug 16, 2010 4:44 pm

Hey Y'all, I need some help from the SA family-this is the best airboat resource in the world, and there is a heck of alot of life experience as well.
I ain't been on here much lately, I don't have much to add since I have replaced the time I used to spend airboating (and then some) with being a Cub Scout leader, boys will grow up but they don't learn to be men by accident. The president may not think very much of the Boy Scouts, but he and I don't share very many of the same opinions.
Here's my issue...for years I haven't heard like I should in my right ear, and have had headaches. I figured the hearing loss was from too many years of airboating, guns, race cars, rock concerts, loud music, and a bunch of other things that I should have protected my hearing from. And I thought the headaches were just from the pressures of being a grown-up and running the rat race that goes with living in south Florida, most of the time it was nothing a couple "Goodys or BC" powders couldn't take care of. Last month I got a cold and it lasted longer than usual with extreme sinus pressure. One morning I woke up with a fairly heavy nosebleed. I wasn't gonna wait for obamacare to kick in, so I went to the walk-in clinic. They said I had a sinus infection, gave me some nasal spray and anti-biotics and sent me on my way. As soon as the pills were done I had a throbbing ear-ache so I went back to the clinic, they said I had an ear infection, gave me nasal spray and more anti-biotics. As soon as the pills were finished I had a sore throat and difficulty swallowing. This time I went to an ear-nose-throat specialist. He confirmed another ear infection and ordered a CT scan to get a better look at the inside. After the scans the ENT said I had bigger problems. Inside my ear he showed me scar tissue, very old infection, and the new infection.
My hearing loss and headaches were from a long standing severe ear infection causing fluid to build up in the middle ear. The old infection has embedded into the bone that seperates the middle ear from the brain cavity. The doctor said if the infection goes into the brain "BAD THINGS" happen very quickly. So I will need to have surgery to remove the infected bone and they need to repair the bone loss.
The best scenario (75-80%) is they have to go in behind my ear and try to repair the damage from the bottom up. Next is the part that worries me, IF they find too much bone damage I will need another surgery and they will have to drill into my skull, gently move part of my brain aside, and repair the bone from the top down.
I've had a decent relationship with GOD over the years, and I believe I have a spot reserved in the non-smoking section of eternity. My faith in HIM is alright, it's everything else I'm not comfortable with.

Here's where I need some advice, I am going back to the doctor this week and trying to ask as many questions as possible. Hoping to feel better about this whole deal. My friends have got me out of almost every situation I have got into, and I could use a little help guys.......
:occasion5:
Here's to coming up with all the right questions, so I can get comfortable with the answers----------Thanks, Randy

Randy--you need a world class specialist for this...a neuro-otologist or a neurosurgeon who works with an ENT as a team approach. I have defended and sued both---and there are HUGE differences in surgical technique. Feel free to call me to discuss. 954-473-660five.

I have been in the Fire and EMS service for a long time now and have seen the good that our teaching hospitals do, in particular in my experience Shands Hospital in Gainesville. This is both personal and professional. I see that you’re in South Florida so I guess Shands would be out of the question but I am sure there is a teaching hospital in your area. That is where I would seek help from. These hospitals have the best and the brightest of everything.
Good Luck and hang in there!

We will keep you in our prayers.
Your post kinda woke me up a little bit.
I have been going thru similar issues with my ear.
Specialist said similar things to me.
I am suppose to go back in a few months and if it has not improved I am to get a cat scan as well.
Something about infection behind the ear drum.
Ear drops and anti biotics won't help it.
Funny thing is I just got a sore throat too.
Hope it is just a cold!

We will keep praying!

Randy, hate to hear the bad news. I would definitely get a second opinion. Ask around for the top dog in that type of surgery. Find out if their is any alternative to surgery. Hope you don't have to go under the knife. Keep us inform, we'll be pulling for you.

Randy,
You can count on our prayers and His promises. You're already asking the right questions. Look for doors that open and those that don't. God's guidance will lead you by the hand.
I'm not far from you, anything you need, you call.

My late father was a nuerosurgeon. If family members had a problem he would always send them to the teaching hospitals like said before. shands, mayo clinic there is one in jax, johns hopkins, and yes Jackson memerial in miami has great doctors. Take care of yourself. Spend the money it will be worth it.

Randy:

A guy I work with had a similar ear infection, it ended destroying the "hammer & anvil" in his ear. They did cut a small hole in his skull, behind his ear, cleaned it out, and put some type of device in the hole that lets him hear. It connects to something that looks like a hearing aid... through his skin magnetically.

You would never guess there is anything wrong with him. He said the surgery was scary, but not that bad. I will try to get more information, and post again. I think what you take away from this so far, is it can have a good outcome.

Best wishes, your in our prayers

Something for all of us to think about: God is bigger than all of our problems, including Randy's hearing issue and He desires a relationship with us so we can come to him anytime. Randy my family will be praying for you and your speedy recovery in this situation. We must all focus on Him in the good times and bad. Let us know after you visit with the doctors again and we will be lifting them up too and guiding their minds and hearts on what is best for you. You know the Good Book says if two or more are gathered in My Name then I am there. I see a whole lotta folks lifting you up..Praise God and lots of prayers...

For a second opinion, Shands may be your best bet, new cancer center and latest equipment.

There is a Ronald Mcdonald house for out of towners.

Reading some of the last posts, more people have had the same problem and are doing well.

If you come to Shands, need anything, call me, 386-454-2986.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!
your support and prayers mean alot. When I told my wife I posted my situation here on SA and asked for help, she asked WHY? And said It's an airboat site, not one for medical information. This place is one of the most unusual sites on the internet. It's not just a web-site in the virtual world, it really is more like a FAMILY. The life experience on here is amazing, I'm not sure there is anything out there that someone one here doesn't know something about.

Charles-I will give you a call, it sounds like you may know just what to ask.

Dusty-I'll keep the faith, and it's thinking of them kids that make this whole thing just a little harder.

Crackerstyle-I hope you get yourself checked out, don't wait too long it only gets worse-YES it is behind the ear drum in the middle ear.

I'm not sure if the GOOD LORD hasn't seen fit to put my mind at ease, or if I just haven't let HIM yet. I am still trying to get as much information as possible so I can ask the right questions to ease my mind. After I meet with the doctor, I will let you guys know....THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP.

Randy:

I talked to the guy at work that had a similar operation. I can tell you he had a benign tumor called clostiatoma (sp?). It attacks the mechanical components of the ear usually due to an ongoing ear infection. Dr. Taggart in Orlando did his surgery. This type of surgery has been done since the 1950’s. It was not a real big deal, it is fairly common surgery, scary but not bad.

Mike at work told me that if you were interested I could give you his number and he would be happy to tell you his experience first hand.

What surprised me most was he left the hospital the same day. He went back to the doctor’s office the next day, and had a lot of “packing” removed out of his ear canal. They re-constructed some of the damaged ear components with wire so he can hear.

He did not miss much work. Yes they do take out some bone to make room for future expansion of the tumor, because it is not possible to get it all out.

I hope this helps, god’s speed, PM me if you want to call Mike

Do all your homework, ask lots of questions and polietly demand answers. The internet is a wonderful resource but it never hurts to do follow-up research and become as much of an expert as you can on your condition.

I wish the best for you and hopefully some of our younger readers will wear that double ear protection when working/playing in loud places.

Good luck and may everday be filled with the blessing of life and good deeds.
