Going to look at a boat today...

Postby Ladnar » Sat Feb 05, 2011 10:51 am

I'm going to look at a boat today. The description is vague, I emailed them and got very little info. They said it is 14.5 feet long, has a 300 HP AC engine, and it's an aluminum "dixie rebel" brand. I'll try to attach a pic, but first of all I've never heard of a 300 HP 6 cylinder naturally aspirated AC engine. Also, it doesn't look like it's 14.5 feet long. And finally, I've searched "dixie rebel" boats and can't find any... if anyone can give any info, I'd appreciate it.Image

I know it may be hard to tell, but does this boat look 14 1/2 feet long? Looks more like 12 or so to me.

Looks like a Dixie hull. Dixie was the precursor to American Airboats. I owned a Dixie similar to that one with a six cyl. A/C engine. Angle Valve Lycoming 0540s put out 300hp--Hard to tell from that pic exactly what model engine it is.

Here is a quote talking about where that hull design originated from.
T. Gaffney wrote:All of the rounded non-trip hull designs come from the first welded hulls that were built by the original Airgator and Grasshopper. The same two men that ran Grashopper and Airgator put Bud Bell(Panther) in business, Stan Floyd(Dixie, now American), Ray Robicheaux and Marshland marine/Trailboss. That's why they all look similar.
