Airboat to Bimini Story

Post by Duece » Mon May 02, 2011 10:59 pm

I've been searching for this and can't seem to find the story. Anybody got any links to where you can read about it. I know who did it and have seen pics of the boat, but wanted to know the "hows" and "whys" of it.

Airboat To Bimini
"Wayne Cone made his trip to Bimini on, it was one he built as kind of a replica. The boat he used was an aluminum fulldeck with 3 rudders and a 540, although he put a 65hp continental for the trip for fuel economy."

Was Wayne Cone on the same effort as Bob Hopwood? If so theres some old "Airboat World"? mags that Rick has put up that might have an article in it about them.

Cool story fellas, lemme tell ya that coastal water is rough . I'll stick to the rivers and maybe once every few years poke out in the gulf long enuff to say I done it.
That took some big hairy ones to do 60 miles of that rough a$$ water.

The boat pictured was used for the crossing, notice the dual control setup, He had a chase boat following him in case he broke or sunk. (think it took more than one attempt to accomplish this, heard he sunk one before making it?) cant find very much more info on this subject, very neat story to say the least, and an AMAZING accomplishment (keep in mind this took place sometime in the 70's....) yall let me know if you wanna put together a 'Tribute Ride' :thumbleft:

If ya look at the picture of the water, I think that 30 mph would be WAY TOOO FAST for those swells... Kinda one of those lean forward, 1/4 throttle, beat the chop with the grass rake kinda rides....

That's the boat and he did cross in it, but there's a touch more to the story from what i remember. If you take a closer look at that same pic and notice the white foam and semi smooth water in front of his boat ... That was pretty much made by the big ol' Bertram yatch he followed over... Damn sure aint takin away from the accomplishment, but there's always more to the story....
