Ramp is not done. Going to be a while. Danny Brantley (Big Gobbler) is staying on top of it and reports the opening in the monthly KRVSA newsletter. This has been a big deal. They completely screwed the ramp up, and are having to redo the structure.

Click and paste the above link, or go to www.theledger.com and search Shady Oaks believe the official name will be Coleman Landing at Shady Oaks.

how many years they been workin on access at that area ... all because they sold the existing acces to sweeten the deal to the developer that bought it .. you ever tried to get a permit for a boat ramp .. thats why sfwmd sold the existing one .. no normal person could ever jump through all the hoops today ... but that is just my opinion and airboats don't need ramps open the airboat area and work on the kicker boat area .... duh

We Ate Lunch there about a Month ago. The Ramps looked done and the Picnic Pavilions are done.
It looks really nice there, they need to get rid of the Lilly Pads so regular Boats can use it, It was no problem for Us with the Air Boat though.

I hope they do open it up for Camping soon, looks like a nice place to spend a few Days.

Yea the ramp looks done. But the contractor didn't
Countersunk the bolts below the boards. You would
Tear up the bottom of your boat. They were suppose
Have corrected it. But they didn't.So now they have to
Find somebody else to correct the issue

You would think they would open everything except the Air Boat Ramp until it is fixed anyway.
There really is no reason a Airboat could not be launched and loaded at the regular Boat Ramp.
Really no different than using Camp Macks Ramp.

hell no .... that would common sense and be cost effective ... two things you will never ever find in a goobermint contract ... They spent years doing a study for the feasibility of a boat ramp there when it was next to the old one ... ROFLMAO

The new and improved, easy to use and nearly unused airboat slide ramp on Istapoga Canal should have been the design criteria for Shady Oaks -- it works and is simple -- no need for expensive concept re-design or consultant services ....

But NOOOOOOO - SFWMD had to have a new, untested, unproven design that uses jagged limerocks around the narrow slideway so that an airboater CAN'T just slide up the grassy lakeshore and load. Simply an ABSURD waste of tax payers dollars.

BTW - The ramp has been tested and it will work - it is unrealisticly narrow and any operator error will put a boat on jagged rocks.

$849,532 to build a ramp that isn't built right..... yeah that sound like a govt. contract to me. After working over here in the sand box you have no idea just how much money we waste on useless projects I see everyday. While things that are needed to help support the troops and the important missions are put to the side.

Something as simple as getting a fan belt can take up to 2-3 months if you ever get it at all. Meanwhile there are brand new(multi million dollar) buildings being built on bases scheduled to be closed down(handed over to the Iraqis) anytime now. No they are not building them for the Iraqis either, they were for the US military, but the contractors took 2 and 3 years longer to finish after there deadline dates. Instead of fining them or getting the money back they are just letting them finish the projects so they can get the rest of there money for a build we will never use. Did I mention I can't get parts to fix my crane that I use to support the military every day of the week......

Despite all of this I'm still glad to see a place that is being built for airboat use in mind....... but I must agree a grass bank would have been cheaper....... how much is a couple pallets of sod going for these day, maybe I'll pitch my idea to the next big government contract. I think I could build a "green ramp" for about 500,000. Depending what sod..... I mean environmentally friendly low friction ramp marital is going for.

Yeah I can vouch for Goverment waste, I work for local Goverment and see the waste all the time. We are in the middle of Cutbacks, Layoffs Etc.
But they somehow came up with 650,000 Dollars to redo Our Parking Lot

On top of that the Construction Company doing the Work Accidently cut a Water Line Today.
The line was about 3 " in Diameter and Water was Shooting about fifty feet in the Air.
So one of their Workers took the Initiative To jump a Fence and turn the Water off.
Well in doing so it cut off Water to a lot of Residences and some Business.

So what was His Reward for doing so? The Sheriff was there and was in the process of charging the poor Guy with a Felony  now ain't that enough to make You sick :violent1:

At least they are wasting our money TRYING to do something for us. i'm sure the powers that be could spend it in different areas, after all a sh!tty boat ramp is better than no boat ramp at all. Trying to look at the bright side :P

Has anyone heard anything on the opening? I talked to a county guy at the Port last week and he said something about they fixed the
bolts but they are coming out of the concrete. This is what I heard wondering if it was true.

The contractor that did the work was fired for doing crappy work.I think they had another contractor come in to correct all the problems.I don't know where it stands now.But you know how goverment works real slow.
