Jim Webb-Old Glory-Marshrider-November-had to cancell

Postby newoldglory » Thu Nov 29, 2012 8:58 am

Looks like we've cancelled the cancell.!!!!!!!!!!!
Jim has been in a hospice care center and is no longer able to walk on his own but still has the courage to make the trip down to Old Glory.
Jim is 68 and was on the Old Glory island before the first camp was built in the early 50's.
His son, wife and very good friends are going to help carry out his wish to return to the everglades where he spent so much time with his Dad as a boy.
It will be a very short stay. They will get here Friday afternoon, rest and possibly frog a short spell, then ride the camps on Saterday morning.
Bonnie Bashum with Marshrider Magazine hopes to be here to honor Jim with a cover story.
Hopefully all will go well for all and he will fullfill his dream of returning to the glades.

I will follow up with posts :toothy7: :cheers: :salute: :proud: :old_glory: :usa: :florida: :rebel:
Now to clean my frogs!
To open ones eyes, you must let them see!

Mr Gerald, We are very excited about bringing Jim down tomorrow. Over the past couple of years Jim has told me so many stories about his time growing up in the glades and has always ended his stories with telling me how much he wanted to get back down there. I can't tell you how much you opening your camp up to Jim and his family and friends and making his last wish come true means to him and all of us coming with him. Me and Jim have only been close friends for about two years but during those two years he has treated me like I was family. I can't wait to be airboating in the Everglades with him and see the smiles on his face. I can't wait to get this weekend started and we will see you tomorrow.

Mr. Gerald, is this an invitation or are you doing a closed ride for the family and friends?
If open invitation, it is a noble cause to participate in.
If it's a private ride, God bless, fair weather and be safe.

Gladescat; It's always an open invite to ride and slide here at Old Glory.
As of last nite, the Jim Webb caravan is to leave Gainsville around 8:30 AM this morning (Friday).
They are exspected to be at the Sawgrass Rec Park landing around 3:30 PM.
I will post as I know.
Jim lives the airboat life and I know he will welcome the sound of the boats.

PB and crew you guys are awesome. As well as Gerald.

Jim is a great man, with the early days southern morals and values, just glad I got to know him. As my papa would say a Man's Man.

Just wish I could be there ya'll. Please tell Jim that ole one eyed Mike is thinking about him and to Slide with Pride.

When I think of Mr. Jim Webb this writting comes to mind.

The True Gentleman (John Walter Wayland - 1899)

The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds
from good will and an acute sense of propriety
and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies;
who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty,
the obscure man of his obscurity,
or any man of his inferiority or deformity;
who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another;
who does not flatter wealth,
cringe before power,
or boast of his own possessions or achievements;
who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy;
whose deed follows his word;
who thinks of the rights and feelings of others rather than his own;
and who appears well in any company;
a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe.

Mike, thanks for posting that. It truly does sound like the Jim Webb that I know.

Theres only a small crew of us going down but Jim is going to see the glades again and that is the most important thing. And I will definitely tell him about the poem.

Jim not only came to Old Glory, he drove his boat to camp.
I swear, I beleive he was 10 years younger the second he cranked his boat.
After breakfast, we will run some of the camps.
Jim is calling the shots rite now.
Then lunch with lots of deep fried frogs and deep fried corn on the cob.
If ya'll are in the area, do stop by.
JIM IS IN HIS GLORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jim Webb is back home safe and sound!

I would like to offer a very special thanks to Gerald Motes (Old Glory) and the Haven Hospice organization. Without both of them Jim Webb would never have been able to make the trip. Gerald, we all appreciate your hospitality! Opening up your camp to a group of strangers was certainly going above and beyond. Gerald even had a Blackhawk on standby in case of emergency. We even got to taste a few of the famous Old Glory frog legs! Actually quite a few.

Unless you were there you can't begin to understand how impossible this seemed even a week ago.

Mr. Webb is very sick and was too weak to even sit in a chair unattended. He could only stay awake for a few minutes at a time. His voice was too weak to communicate. He hasn't eaten a meal in weeks. Haven Hospice of Gainesville FL took Mr. Webb into their "In House" Care Center for the express purpose of getting him to the Everglades one last time. His pain was brought under control and he was feed intravenously for a week just prior to the trip. A port was inserted for easy access of medications and away we went. Jim was picked up at the Care Center early Friday morning. They made a comfortable bed for him in the back of his sons truck that was pulling Mr. Webbs boat.

When we arrived at the Sawgrass ramp we lifted him to the boat and put him in the front seat. He looked at us and shook his head and informed us his seat was the one behind the gas pedal. None of us knew what to do other than honor his wish and Jim drove all the way to Old Glory! I am here to tell you we were pretty nervous.....OK we were scared to death! but his instincts took over and he drove all the way to Old Glory just like he always would have. Every time he was on the boat he drove! Jim had a smile on his face and a sparkle in his eye that only a trip to his old stomping grounds could have brought.

Many boats came to Old Glory to see Jim. We certainly appreciate all that went out of their way to pay him a visit. Jim got to see a few friends from the old days. That meant a lot to him. This was his first trip back to the Glades in 40 years.

All of Jim's immediate family was able to participate in this great trip. I hope other people will be inspired by this great opportunity enjoyed by Jim Webb. It is never too late to fulfill a dream.

What does it mean to shed tears?
We shed tears because of the pain that our loved ones endure.
We shed tears because they had so much more to share.
We don't cry for the passing of our loved ones for we know they have gone to a trully better place.
We cry for our'e selves, we cry for OUR loss.
We don't cry out of greed, we cry because of the empty space in our life. It's OK to cry.
Time cures everything and that empty space will be filled with children and other loved ones.
JIM WEBB is not going to be gone, he will always be in our hearts and minds, he will live on.
When cowboys die they ride the range in the sky on horses.
Santa Clause thunder accross the sky in a sled behind reigndeer.
Here comes JIM WEBB in his JUNK YARD FORD AIRBOAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bring it on JIM, I'll be listening for you. :toothy7: :cheers:

The past event for JIM WEBB was his dream come true.
The event before that was a dream come true for a few of our veterans that gave us the freedom to do these events.
These, and more events to come is my dream come true.
I've found more true friends (and contributors/help for good cause) in the past few years than throughout my whole life.
Maybe because I've refined my life or possibly because real people see a need to pull together again to close a gap that we were not aware of.
Either way, I look foreward to a brite future for Camp Old Glory.
Many thanks to every one that has helped AND any one that will help in the future to promote these great events.

Jim Webb did in fact help me clean a few frogs.
Not only cleaned, but he refused to get on the boat to go home untill he got his deep fried frogs legs to eat.
Jim had not eat more than a spoonfull of food in 3 days, he ate at least 3 frogs that I know of.
Jim was stronger and allert as he drove HIS boat back to the landing.
Bless him, his strong family, dedicated friends, Bonnie bashum/Mashrider Magazine (for her PERSONAL concern and coverage), anyone and every one that MADE this happen.
Jim Webb never had money, he had more.
Jim has the best of friends, compassion, determination to make it happen, and love in his heart.
Jim may not be a well known ledgend but I would not be supprised to see a monument in his honor, he is a REAL man.
I am honored to know him and be his friend. :salute:

Marsh Rider was honored to be at Old Glory, to meet Jim
and his family, renew old friendships, meet new friends.
We, too, look forward to more opportunities to share the
peace and wonder of Old Glory, the Glades and its very
special people.

Jim Webb got to bask in the warmth of the sun; drive
his airboat one more time; return to Old Glory and be assured
it's place in the fabric of our heritage will never fade. It's in good,caring
hands.

Image

I"ll post a few of my photos (after I see if I did this correctly).

At one point I told Jim his smile covered his entire face! His response "I only have 4 teeth left"
I assured him the sparkle in his eyes made his whole face smile.

The transformation of Jim from the time when he was put on the boat to the point, 2 minutes later, when he was back in the driver's seat was beyond description.

Scottymartin it was wonderful of you to share some time with Jim.
I'm sure it brought back a lot of memories for him and helped his family
see a part of his life they never would have seen any other way. How great
to be able to take your family back in time to a place you grew up in and
loved.

Roxy 7430, you and Ms Roxy 7430, Poobought, and NewOldGlory
are to be commended for making Jim's dream come true.
You are correct, it's never too late to make something special happen.

I cannot say enough good things about Haven Hospice. From the brief time
I was there, I felt the warmth and caring of all the staff. A not-for-profit
Hospice is indeed the best place to turn when a family is faced with the
often frightening end of life decisions that must be made for and with a loved one.
Hospice is there for the patient and the family as well.
Just knowing there is someone you can
call and ask questions of is a great comfort to care givers.

You are each very special people who saw a need and put everything aside to make
it happen.

Jim will ride in that marsh in the sky and wait for each of us to join him. May God's
angels wrap Jim and his family in their wings and bring them safely through this
part of their journey.
