Florida wetlands, uplands, and forests have been the home of sportsmen and women and outdoors enthusiasts since before we were a state. 100 years ago, you could pretty much tramp anywhere and be on public land, hunt and fish, and enjoy the outdoors.

Last year's legislative session included the infamous attempt to lower the Ordinary High Water Line along Florida's waterways which would have given adjacent landowners tens of thousands of acres of public land at no cost to them. Of course, the public depending on access to those lands for recreation would have been the biggest losers.

HB 33/SB 466 is even worse!

These bills give land away to private landowners in the form of a lease with a simple promise to put some of their own lands into a Conservation easement...sounds good doesn't it? But the lands given away can be any public lands adjacent to a landowner's property. They will be able to farm the lands, cut timber and manage the lands for leases...basically making these lands their private land and again at the taxpayers' expense.

HB 33/SB 466, if passed, could strip YOU of the marsh, upland, or forest where you love to hunt!

UW-F opposes Florida SB 584 by Senator Hays and HB 901 by Rep. Stone -

by a unanimous Board vote...

Florida House bill - HB 901 submitted by Rep. Stone and its companion bill SB 584 submitted by Sen. Alan Hays.

HB 901/SB 584 if passed into law would end the growth of public lands for conservation in Florida.

HB 901/SB 584 would make buying new land for conservation almost impossible. It would effectively end our ability to manage no net loss of wetlands by throwing a lock on mitigation. Eventually it would require the loss of important public lands as alternatives dwindle.

HB 901/SB 584 is a very poorly conceived bill.

Our ability to properly manage water resources for quality and supply in Florida would be seriously impeded.

Florida stands at a crossroad regarding conservation of natural resources and the quality of life we all expect. Issues such as water quality and water supply, and the interests of the recreation and tourism industry in Florida require us to make balanced, thoughtful and responsible decisions regarding public land, agriculture, and development. These decisions must include the addition of more public lands which will be required to facilitate filter marshes along our surface water bodies, more STAs, and more purchase of land in re-charge areas.

These requirements for more public land, along with a balanced program of Restoration and Active Management of wetlands and other native lands, are necessary to ensure that our water supply is protected and that the beauty and diversity of Florida's habitat is preserved for our children and theirs, far into the future.
