Family Of 5 On Airboat Missing In Everglades

Post by rick » Fri Apr 05, 2013 11:06 am

Anybody heard of this?

THE EVERGLADES (CBSMiami) – A group of tourists on an airboat are missing Friday morning deep in the Florida Everglades.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue got a call Friday and dispatched units to roughly 40 miles west of Krome Avenue off Tamiami Trail. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission has taken the lead of the search since the initial call came in.

According to FWC’s Jorge Pino, a family of five is believed to be missing. The five include a husband, wife, and three children and all are from Ohio. The family was not with a guide and instead on their own airboat.

FWC said the last contact with the family was Thursday at 3 p.m.

Haven`t heard a thing. We need to know specific what location did they ride on the trail. North side or south side. The south side has terrible cell phone reception with a lot of cypress trails. Hope someone has some details on the where abouts of at least their launching area.

I was just updated on the situation. Mdfr has there airboat out and the helicopter. Miccosukee is also putting a boat in along with mdpd's helicopter. The boat still hasn't been located. They have coordinates from the boats position yesterday. Hopefully this has a good outcome. I'll keep y'all posted if I hear more. Cell phone range is ok depends where you are.

This is not a good thing. It hits home since I know I go out all the time with my family and know the dangers out there for a stranded person with in this case is times 5 with the entire family. I'm sure if PD and FWC needs help they know there are plenty on here that will be willing to come out there and help out in the search. Hopefully they would reach out to all of us to help out if they need extra boats in the area to search. I'm sure they have more officers than they have boats. I know I would be more than willing to go get my boat and drop in to help search. They could even put one or two of their officers on my boat to search. Alot of us are also running GPS and with an officer onboard will have communications in case they are found and need to get out quickly due to injuries or what not.

Thank goodness they found them but if they are being hoisted into a helo does that mean they are injured and or needing help getting that airboat out. Hope it's just a precaution to get the kids checked out and they're all perfectly healthy but the Mosquitos can do a number on you if your not prepared out there

Sounds like the heli found them first. Maybe out of gas or air rescue is getting some real time training. That's just speculation from my expierences though.

Sure glad this turned out on a positive note. It certainly could have gone the other way just as easily. Good job to all those who searched. I think a LOT of prayers got answered due to them.
