Trash around the Milk Bus.

Post by SteveReid » Thu Feb 20, 2014 7:05 pm

Skinnypockets and I took some friends to Lake Kissimmee today, stopped at the Milk Bus. Trash was all around it, this much was within 30 feet around the Bus. Had a great day, good riding.

Yep last Sunday wife and I stopped at drasdo for a while. Picked up a bag full. Everytime we stop we pick up a lot of trash. Sad part about it is the trash is left by people on airboats. Can't call them airboaters. As airboaters don't leave any trash. Their just want-a be's.

On yes while picking up trash wife found a moldy 20 dollar bill. So she got paid that time for picking up somebody elses trash.Exchanged it today at the bank for a nice crisp clean one.

I don't know what people are thinking when they do stuff like that but I respect you for picking it up. About 12 years ago I pulled up to B.S. hill and there was quite a crowd and beer cans on the ground all around where I parked so as soon as I shut my boat off I just started picking them up right in front of the people that probably threw them down and as I was picking them up I was making comments as to how sorry it was for someone to leave such a mess. Then about 30 min later a game warden was walking the hill checking people's boats and he said to me you sure do have a lot of beer cans in your boat (about 10 different brands) I replied I certainly didn't bring 10 brands of beer with me I cleaned this s&@t up when I got here.

wife and I stopped and ate lunch at square pond a few weeks back and we bagged up over a dozen beer cans and anything else that didn't belong there!

Truly a sad state of affairs.

When I got to Miles Point on Saturday morning early, trash was everywhere. I filled my frog bag up with bottles, cans and stuff I don't want to describe in detail. Put lots in KRVSA's trash containers. Others did the same thing ....

It was a mess. Everywhere you stop, its the same sorry story. I don't have the answer.

My granddad and my dad and uncle got to run it before it was shut down. We all lived not far from there off of northlake blvd. I wish I could have gotten to ride it.

Thanks to all who continue to have this concern. Shortly after the formation of the KRVSA one of the first things we did was organize what would become an annual lake clean up. For those who were there then you may recall that we filled the dumpster and then some. The KCOL had never before received any such attention. For nearly a century modern man had used this system, consumed it's resources, recreated to our heart's content and never given anything back. Litter was the norm and most had never thought of any reason not to add to it. Motor oil came in cardboard quart containers with no easy way to seal once opened. Boaters either allowed storage compartments to become oily messes or they pitched the cans in the bushes. Doing so may it much easier to throw everything else out as well, it was habit, it was the norm.
Believe it or not there was more trash on the ground before the first lake clean up than there is today. There were fewer users by far but the decades of litter had piled to a point that was nothing short of grotesque.
The Lake Clean Up changed all of that. In the early years participation was high. Once again there were fewer boaters but a larger percentage worked to remove the trash. We didn't point fingers so much as we took ownership of OUR lake. We cleaned it much the same way any homeowner would after a wild house party. We took pride in it and hoped the pride would become contagious, and it did. People who spent a few hours in the morning picking up trash became users who could never throw another piece down, never again. Many became guardians who could never bear to see anyone else discard even the smallest item without correcting the act.
For those of you who know me you know that I seldom make public appearances. I'm always there but seldom seen. This past weekend I did stop and talk to some folks. And in two locations I encountered people who were thoughtlessly throwing their litter on the ground. The ease at which they were able to do this tells me they had probably never picked any up. As I said those who have been there just can't do it anymore. I honestly feel like my arms would fall off if I dropped a piece of trash on that hallowed ground.........and my heart breaks to witness someone else do it.
As it happens most years the buzz is already beginning for this years Lake Clean Up. Plans are being made, reservations secured and the KRVSA committees and officers doing their thankless duty. As I have in recent years I hope that the true focus for this day returns to where it should be. I hope the contagious pride of a job well done returns for those who participate and i hope it infects those who do not.
Once again thank you all who have the affliction year around.
By the way my would be litter bugs from last weekend..........let's just say I changed their minds.......as least for that occasion.

Sideways as Always,

JCR

We run it right up till about 1983 we can in from okeechobee rd. my uncles dug the M canal from the L 8 to Haverhill we played on the boats why they ran draglines . A friend of my had a lease of west north lake so we could run a 300ac. piece till 97 .
